Dear World,
When you say “peace,”
Do you mean silence?
Because Ukrainians won’t stay quiet.
We’ll fight for our voices,
Our homes,
Our right to exist.
Ukraine’s strike campaign is hitting targets 1,000km away, costing Russia 40% of its recent oil windfall. Meanwhile, the Iran war is reshaping the Indo-Pacific. My weekly update on war and strategic competition covers it all. mickryan.substack.com/p/turning-th...
We’re defending Western Civilization by kicking Plato and Shakespeare out of university classes.
Meanwhile in Russia: state TV host Vladimir Solovyov was upset about Viktor Orbán's loss in Hungary, Pavel Gubarev's interview with Yury Dud, and Russia's faltering economy.

Stop praising Orbán for not attempting a coup.
He only stepped down because Magyar's win was too massive to steal.
He rigged the constitution, captured the institutions, and used state media to his advantage.
He did everything he could to destroy democracy, and he failed
In my piece last week about the US not understanding war, it was said that one problem was the US finds war too "easy" (with disastrous results). In this piece I explain how that works and why US assumptions about war are built often on unreality. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
Phenomenal. Read this.
The message left by Pope Leo XIV in the guestbook of the Great Mosque of Algiers: “May the mercy of the Most High keep the noble Algerian people and the entire human family in peace and freedom.”
Peter Magyar confirmed that Szijjarto, Orbán's FM, has barricaded himself with some of his closest colleagues and is shredding documents related to the sanctions on Russia any other evidence of treason.
"The retraction should call attention to...the Trump administration’s continued retreat from efforts to counter white supremacist violence, its ongoing politicization of U.S. intelligence, and its alarming use of the bully pulpit to spew extremist rhetoric."

Hungary has chosen Europe.
Europe has always chosen Hungary.
A country reclaims its European path.
The Union grows stronger.
This is huge!
PATTON: I don’t see how this war ends. Maybe Putin will eventually get blown up by one of oligarchs. But I really feel Ukrainians are in very strong position right now.
They’re losing fraction of what Russians are losing. Russians have already taken something like 1.5 million casualties.
Ukraine's frontline operations and long range strikes are hurting Russia more. China is helping Iran and has 'opened the classroom' to learn from the Iran War. This and more in my latest weekly update. mickryan.substack.com/p/the-learni...
This is excellent!
Meanwhile in Russia: decorated state TV host Vladimir Solovyov urged Iran to focus on acquiring nuclear weapons as soon as possible.

Worth a listen.
Hi All, Just sent out my free weekend update. The big story this week was the Ukrainians speaking truthfully about the USA not being their (or Europe's) friend. In war seeing reality as opposed to what you desperately want to see, is a fundamental test. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
So US is going to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. No oil or anything else gets out. Prices will skyrocket. Nothing could be better from the Russian perspective.

Not ideal
BUTTIGIEG: The strait was open before they started this
KERNEN: They were close to having 11 nuclear weapons!
BUTTIGIEG: We had other ways of dealing with them
KERNEN: Like what? Obama's way?
BUTTIGIEG: That worked
KERNEN: That didn't work!
BUTTIGIEG: Did they get a nuclear weapon under Obama?
All military objectives achieved. Zero political and strategic objectives achieved. = defeat

"It's impossible that he doesn't understand that, but he, he genuinely doesn't."
@timmiller.bsky.social and @anneapplebaum.bsky.social talk Trump's lack of strategy on today's Bulwark Podcast
With this settlement the US is worse off in every way than it was before the war; Iran is strengthened by the huge new tolls in the Straits of Hormuz, paid by the whole world. (1/14)
