Hegseth’s ESV Bible is also stamped with a Jerusalem Cross and “Deus Vult.”

Watching this story blow up from A Public Witness to global news, late night jokes, and more has been tremendously fun.
And it shows the impact and importance of our reporting.
Woah, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is resigning amid scandals: www.notus.org/trump-white-...
Only Hegseth has hosted more worship services in this admin than her (& I'm only one to cover them all: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/government...). Hope this stops the "Secretary's Prayer Services"
The story about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reading a prayer based on a scene in a Quentin Tarantino film really did go viral in the United States and elsewhere.
And it all started with our newsletter A Public Witness!
It's been fun & stunning watching how the story about Hegseth's Pulp Fiction prayer went viral around the world. And it all started with a report from A Public Witness. Here's a roundup of the impact of that report: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/that-viral...

Charles Barkley jokes about Hegseth's Pulp Fiction prayer! 😄
Lots of social media memes, a Colbert monologue, & now this. Lots of humor thanks to a report from A Public Witness: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...
As @ruthgraham.bsky.social reports, Trump to join Bible reading effort next week & read from 2 Chronicles 7 (or is it Two Chronicles): www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/u...
As I noted in 'The Bible According to Christian Nationalists,' that's a popular passage to misuse: bookshop.org/a/110819/978...
Glenn Beck makes 2 big lies to defend of Hegseth's Pulp Fiction prayer. 1. Beck claims Hegseth said he was "badly paraphrasing Ezekiel" but "the media cuts that out." I've watched service & have transcript. Hegseth never said that, only that prayer reflected Ezekiel (but actually misquotes text). 1/

On Wednesday, Hegseth said his Pulp Fiction prayer (publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...). That same day, the military again blew up a boat. There's a reason the violent mashup of biblical language in the movie scene resonates with him. But he should keep watching film (& keep reading Bible)
Well, this is the first time a report from A Public Witness inspired an Iranian Lego video. (Here's the report that sparked all of this: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...)
Colbert hilariously mocked Hegseth's Pulp Fiction prayer last night:

Wild to see that a report from A Public Witness led to Colbert jokes. Here's the report that sparked all of this: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...
Here they are side by side for reference.
And in Hegseth’s ESV Bible, Ezekiel 25:17 simply reads: “I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them.”

Pentagon spokesperson trying to defend Hegseth's Pulp Fiction prayer (which I broke news of: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...). Parnell's statement is wrong. It's clearly the PF prayer & it does misquote Ezekiel.
You might have heard that at the latest government worship service yesterday, Pete Hegseth read a violent prayer that was adapted from a scene in the Quentin Tarantino film “Pulp Fiction.”
We broke this story, and you can read our report and watch the video of Hegseth reciting the prayer here:

This is bad application of the text. But also quite self-righteous from guy who just quoted Pulp Fiction as a "prayer" publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...
Over at the bad place, RT posted video of Hegseth's prayer yesterday with Samuel L. Jackson uttering those lines in Pulp Fiction. But the Russian state outlet didn't cite who broke this story. So thanks for nothing, Putin.

While Pete Hegseth mentioned Ezekiel 25:17 as an inspiration for the prayer, he did not point out the more direct link to Pulp Fiction.
Samuel L. Jackson’s character claims to quote that Bible verse but takes poetic license with the text. What he says in the movie is *very* close to today’s prayer.
what’s funny about this is that tarantino wrote this “ezekiel 25:17“ for the film. it isn‘t actually in the bible. publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-bo...

It's kind of perfect that amid a battle with (of all people) the Pope over theology (of all things) this idiotic TV host administration is quoting Tarantino movies as if they were real scripture.
