If you want to create cool materials, the first step is to study their properties... I like using a cheap ($24) microscope I got from Amazon to capture a closeup section of a surface. Then I focus on trying to recreate that small section of the surface procedurally so the result can be tiled.

It was crazy setup! Fluid move spheres, spheres push fluids, spheres have mitosis animation with some post wiggle/wave animation, a lot of glitches during animation was smoothed with chops.
