Honoured to have the opportunity to read at this year's Vancouver Writers Fest.

One year ago I saw the 2024 @twssfu.bsky.social authors read and thought to myself, "how terrifying!"

But I was inspired and now am so grateful to be part of the 2025 cohort - congratulations to all!

Thanks for posting this, Kevin. Beautiful essay staring down an important question about why we write.

Serviceberries! I've tasted serviceberries in BC and found them so-so, but these ones I picked during a visit to Newfoundland are sweet, and delicious. Blueberry meets apple/pear, for me, although some describe the flavour as almondy.

I have this too! Foraged and eaten them many times but always with a little unsettled feeling. Another thing is that I eat them in smallish amounts, versus feasting on other species like chanterelles. Just in case, I guess! Maybe it will go away at some point

I've never made them into powder for dye, but I'm intrigued. Hope you find a suitable replacement! 🌿

Nice! I love nettle tea but have used younger plants out of caution, but maybe unnecessary caution. β˜•

Cool, I'd love to see what you create with it! πŸ’™πŸ§‘πŸ’š

"The experience of a young adult returning home after a long absence is not always a simple one. Warm feelings of nostalgia mingle with darker memoriesβ€”the ones childhood so expertly preserves."

If you have the time, read this passage aloud, then read the margin note left by a previous borrower.

Sounds delicious! I've never made it before. My son and I made salmonberry fruit leather together once--really good. And sticky!

Each year the seductive beauty of the #salmonberry tricks me into believing it will be more delicious than it actually is.

With a few wild rose petals I picked too.

A snare drum lay abandoned, its #skin torn beyond repair. An empty barrel had been rolled into the fountain and now bobbed gently from the force of two pigeons attempting to rest on it but taking flight as Ilya came near.

People walked by these things as though they weren’t there.

A9. My TWS classmates are very skilled at invoking sound, smell, body sensations in their work. I think I probably overemphasize sight--what is the character noticing around them on a visual level. What draws their attention?

A7. Newer to my writing practice than most, and always wandering, wandering.
I keep track of "other ideas" on a Word doc or my phone. I fight no urges.

A4. I'm a compulsive re-reader, not just at the start of a writing session, but throughout, like every 30 minutes I go back and re-read a few passages, might edit for tone or flow, but mostly just trying to pick up on any vibes or images or themes unconsciously emerging. Trying to notice.

A5. Not so much a task as a mindset: remembering that my writing time is limited helps me focus and keep going, and to be productive while also trying to have some fun with the process.

Q3. If I have a deadline, that will focus my writing goals for the session. If no deadline, my goal is to make the piece better--can mean adding, deleting, changing, so I don't think too hard about word count.

No, but good idea! I'd be interested to hear if others use this type of thing.
I think I just have a vague "make it good" voice in my head. That sometimes shrinks into a less ambitious "keep it going" voice.

Always a treat to be in this space at Upstart and Crow. Even better listening to these talented women read and discuss their recently published books. πŸ“š
