if there is a path to either national nonpartisan redistricting or proportional representation, it is going to go through one party or another. but the first step toward it actually happening is for that party to win power, and you go to war with the system you have, not the one you want.

It is hard to overstate the level of anger among me and my neighbors over what this administration has done to our government. The ratfucky ads were never going to swing it, even if this issue wasn’t an easy one for voters to understand
Margin is decreasing as PWC starting to report in, at Yes +18 right now.
Yes winning Prince William County early vote big
NOVA anger at DOGE has not gone away
Will continue to haunt Virginia GOP
I dislike this framing because it disguises the reason we’re all here: we have a Supreme Court that has sanctioned political gerrymandering AND eviscerated the Voting Rights Act. That’s the bad stuff.
Political gerrymandering is frankly the LEAST that Democrats in power can do.
I figure the GOP strategy of “confuse or deceive the hell out of the electorate” is worth a couple of points, but I didn’t think it would be enough
Loudoun Election Day 2024 is not something I want to repeat ever again, so this is a good sign
That is terrifying
The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”
For the first time in our 9-year history:
WE ARE HIRING!
We're seeking a full-time fundraising manager to establish and grow our non-profit's development department - in other words, to raise money and help us grow! Remote-hybrid in the SF Bay Area with benefits!

I see this in the used book market and it’s startling - suddenly a book selling between $12-48 will jump to $240 (and interestingly, often they seem to jump into that $200-250 range).
You could probably do voters a good service by mapping politicians on an X and Y axis with four quadrants: YIMBY or NIMBY (housing), and YIMBY or NIMBY (data centers).
Like, if someone is NIMBY (housing) and YIMBY (data center), voters should know and vote agains them accordingly.
To mark the 10th anniversary of Prince's death on Tuesday, we're getting probably the most high profile demo of a song he wrote for someone else that notably WASN'T on the "Originals" release, the demo for the song he wrote for Celine Dion. "With This Tear": www.startribune.com/prince-celin...

No one likes people who nit pick in public
That’s what I’ve heard as well
He’s a good addition to this list, though I think it’s funny he breaks his own record like 1 cm at a time or whatever. Like, I would too, but it’s still funny.
DC area folks (including some of my family with kids her age) take swimming very seriously, and then Katie Ledecky came along. Like…holy cow.
this is fucking nuts:
Mayor Mamdani and President Obama read a picture book to a group of children.
Mayor Mamdani and President Obama chat and laugh with a group of children.
Mayor Mamdani and President Obama chat and laugh.
Children hug Mayor Mamdani.
Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx.
In between singing wheels on the bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City — one where New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible.
Child: I know your name. Mamdani.
Obama: What’s his first name?
Child: Mayor.
You know what people love? Pressing real buttons. Touchscreens and haptic responses don’t really give you that.
Tangible things over which you have full ownership can provide more meaning and significance than digital property that can disappear in a moment.
Also, some of it just looks really cool
this is one of the most interesting things I've read about AI. Ben Affleck just sold his AI startup to Netflix for $600m. it's based on his analysis - as someone who's worked in movies for decades - of what AI is *actually useful for*. which is eg: adjusting film lighting.
