Urban areas subsidise rural areas in millions of ways. It’s not in your interest to turn this into a competition!

Insect-based cat food just came on the market here… unfortunately our cat wasn’t a fan but it shows the way. Plus our cat is most definitely a baby substitute so the relative footprint is pretty small!
Very cool, but a missed opportunity to call these events “flip floppers”
I presume you’ve nothing against indoor cats? That’s the norm here in Canada, with bears, cougars etc. out to eat them
I’m quoted in this excellent Scientific American article on the incredible Zagros mountains, the focus of much of my PhD and postdoc research. The Zagros’s unique tectonic history explains the Gulf’s rich oil and gas reserves and ultimately the Gulf itself, including the narrow Strait of Hormuz.
and killing 150 innocent children by bombing a school. Where is your humanity?

February 21, 1993, died on this day aged 105 years, Danish seismologist Inge Lehman.
She discovered that the Earth has a inner core announcing it in 1936 with the shortest title for a paper ever: P' - after the seismic discontinuity between core and mantle shown by the P-waves

A thread for the 15-year anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. I won’t have a chance to post it on the day, so I’m doing it a couple days early. Note that the work I’m posting was carried out by many brilliant people. 1/
The Archers. It’s been running since 1951 and is past 20,000 episodes
⚒️🧪 friends, let's make sure @agu.org knows we all want them to get completely off the Nazi cesspool. 3...2...1....go! (that means like and reskeet this!)

The inevitable Keely Hodgkinson–Femke Bol showdown is going to be spectacular!
Better still, tax profits from property sales like most other countries do (heck even the US). Time to tax unearned income, not just earned income
Yeah I meant taking the burden off grad students who have enough on their plate. Agree that senior PhDs should be reviewing too though
Grad student-led papers should be included too

The Daşmərdan (Dashmardan) mud volcano in Azerbaijan erupted ~16:50 on the 30th Jan 2026. The eruption lasted ~15 mins and was accompanied by a pillar of flame several hundred meters high. Daşmərdan had previous documented eruptions in 1866, 1954, 1976, 1986 and 2011.
Try eating a little less meat. Pretty sure all of those animals were raised in cramped, cruel conditions, and yet you complain about a few extra dollars from your wallet?
The lack of obvious internal deformation *within* the landslide is amazing. Must be a very simple failure plane?
This is great. That orange crosswalk is ^so^ dangerous. I once saw a driver blast through while a pedestrian was mid way across, missing causing a fatality by inches.

326 years ago tonight (9 p.m. Jan. 26, 1700) a M~9 Cascadia subduction earthquake rocked the west coast from #VancouverIsland to northern California. The Juan de Fuca Plate slipped up to 20 m, causing a large tsunami, strong shaking and landslides

Thank you Dave and Victoria Council for making such great progress on safe cycling infrastructure across YYJ. There’s still a long way to go but it is truly appreciated 🙏
Exciting to see lake tsunami research in the spotlight! I joined CBC to talk about our work at Chehalis Lake and how we can go about better understanding lake tsunami hazard here in BC. #Geohazards #LakeTsunami #ScienceCommunication

Dr. Gladys West, the pioneering mathematician whose work laid the foundation for modern GPS technology, has died. She was 95.
One of my favourite trivia questions is how many (or which) countries Canada shares a land border with. Maybe it’ll be more than two soon, given the damage being done to the union…
