It’s an interesting era looking back, however I don’t remember it fondly because I recall the times as a kid when I asked for a game for a holiday or my birthday and then getting the GBA version.

Yeah, it’s really great for things like checkpoints. If the game was constantly reminding me, I’d be mad, but something about it coming from another player gives me more of a “Oh yeah I SHOULD put down a checkpoint actually!”
Demon Tides does this but you use premade graphics and shapes to create an image and graffiti it onto the landscape.
It made the whole experience super enjoyable because of the hints mixed with fun creativity. There was one island with a snowman where users left a bunch of snowmen designs.
