Santana - Winnimg

Genuine question: what seems to be the consensus about latter day Santana? I'm talking his late 90s - early 2000s guest vocalist era onwars. I get the feeling people think it's lame. His big hit was with the Matchbox 20 guy.

The difference is that the songwriting isn't as good but I MIGHT prefer Fernando van Arb's guitar tone, so it evens out to about a 3/5.

Krokus - Burning Bones

Nearly every description I had heard of Krokus prior to hearing them was basically "Swiss AC/DC"

You don't know the half of it. The vocal style and structure is EXACTLY like Accadacca. It's uncanny and definitely not a coincidence.

Joan Jett - Bad Reputation

Probably Joan Jett's most iconic original song (I Love Rock n Roll being a cover) and with good reason. If I had to nitpick and this is a EXTREME nit to pick, I think the key change comes too early. Nearly half the song is in that key. Just weird to me.

Ok, the music is better than the last Iris track I listened to, but the lyrics are just plain nasty. I think he literally says "quit your bitchin' and get back to the kitchen." No thank you!

Donnie Iris - I Can't Hear You

If I were to do a tier list of "subject matters for songs," then I'd rank "I hate my bitch wife/girlfriend" pretty low. Not like you can't make a good song about that, but I have learned that Donnie Iris can't.

Franke & the Knockouts - Sweetheart

A lot of singers sounded like the guy from Foreigner, I'm noticing. The guy who sings this went on to co-write that "Time of My Life" song from Dirty Dancing. I wasn't sold on Sweetheart at first, but for some reason, the keyboard solo got me

Joe Ely - Musta Gotta Notta Lotta

I was not familiar with Joe Ely, but a cursory search tells me he was big in the Austin progressive country scene, another thing I'm unfamiliar with. From this song, seems like he was a big fan of rockabilly too.

Dire Straits - Solid Rock

The other Dire song this week is more straightforward. A 3 minute rocker and yet... something feels off. Knopfler's voice is very buried in the mix I listened to. You can hardly hear him! Was this a problem in the original release?

This is a solid song, albeit a bit of a slow burn. It takes about 2 minutes to really click, but once it does, it doesn't let go.

The first of TWO Dires to chart this week. I ended up listening to the slbum version which is 2 minutes longer than the version that played on radios.

That isn't a knock against the song, by the way. It has a contagious energy, even if I couldn't nail down where the song was going.
