They're so desperate for growth via private investment that they dare say nothing to offend their corporate overlords. Very depressing.

In my own personal opinion the crisis in universities is: the student loan scandal, fees, debt, high rents, poor quality housing, high transport costs, lack of flexible work, low wages, long waiting lists for counselling, lack of specialist support equipment for students, mass staffing cuts.
An excellent defence of the social sciences in the face of merciless funding cutbacks by the State.
Looking forward to reading this from my good friend (and mentor) @drimogenjones.bsky.social
I'm sure that book of theirs says something about not making "graven images" and "idols". Like much of the book, MAGA seems to ignore the bits that aren't about hate.
I think we learnt today that Level 5 have invested heavily in mobile development, so console game development probably hasn't received additional investment. Given that, between Inzuma 11, Fantasy Life and Layton they have their hands full. Decapolice should never have been announced so early.
I'm in mandatory training hell. Fortunately @deecooke.bsky.social bought a load of cheap chocolate eggs on Monday and so that is getting me through.
I still post to FB, although predominantly video game reviews.
Such a depressing but important read about how screwed up the financial situation of UKHE has become, and how it is enabling borderline criminal activities. I mentioned Mil Milington's novel last week. This makes it look prophetic.
This brings to mind Mil Millington's "Things my girlfriend and I argue about". Perhaps it's the fact the main premise of the novel is that the uni the protag worked for had teamed up with East Asian mobsters to recruit students and he was left as liaison. I'm sure this company is much more legit.
Have actually discovered that some of the stories I thought were April Fools gags this morning were actually legit. Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction.
I'm adding an extra level of scepticism and doubt to all posts on this site until tomorrow morning.
Just watching the PC World preview of Zero Company. Completely bought in, just worried how EA are going to mess it up with microtransactions, recurring revenue and nickel and diming players.
No evidence of family voting in by election
Farage claims whitewash after police found no evidence of Gorton family voting.
Reform offered hate. We offered hope. Hope won.
The police say his accusations of cheating are baseless. Farage is a bad loser.
Excited to attend these fascinating inaugural lectures in June, especially after learning so much about coronial death investigation yesterday.
My niece acts like a Tasmanian Devil and the only time her parents get some peace is when she's sat watching a YouTube video or something on Disney+. Still her attention span is very limited and so she'll sit quiet for 10mins, at most. She probably does get an hour, over the course of the day.
Thank you @drimogenjones.bsky.social for a fascinating afternoon discussing the complex arrangements around coronial investigation in England and Wales. My head is spinning from all the diverse models but you have given me plenty to get my teeth into with the forthcoming Forensic Medicine monograph.
Now I do..
Fair enough, and sure this is me (perhaps unwisely) coming in from a Sociology of Scientific Knowledge background wading into a history debate, but still think how and why certain claimsmaking is made legitimate and other claims false is interesting and powerful.
Knowledge, as a concept, is too pluralistic/multiple and so doesn't help illuminate why some knowledge claims win out (become "science") and others don't.
I agree with much of this great blog but I think there is a reason to keep the label science and that is in order to identify who wins the epithet "science" in a crebibility contest, and then explain how that contest was won (usually identifying social causes).
Didn't realise there was so much post-Solo Qi'ra content. Using this video as a list of new stuff to read.
ALCS website is now live with information on the March distribution. Shame I've forgotten my password (cue frequently refreshing email for the reset password link).
Looking forward to welcoming people to Newcastle for these discussions on healthcare and policing.
Who wants to join me in developing "Vibes Studies", where all our claims will be based on the vibes of Right Wing mouthpieces? Could be a way of keeping our jobs!
The problem stems from our job being to teach students to think critically and develop evidenced arguments, and unfortunately for the Populists, their claims are easily undermined with the most basic evidence. To kowtow to Populists would be a fundamental change in the role of the university. (2/2)
In a prior institution I received a complaint I was 'brainwashing' students as I awarded a failing mark to a paper espousing right-wing views. In response, I demonstrated the paper was based on no scholarship, evidenced entirely from the Daily Mail and the author's mother! (1/2)
Akira flashbacks.
Amazing blog from @drimogenjones.bsky.social on being a scholar working at the intersection of medico-legal work (boundaries atop of boundaries). Lots to think about, especially about what constitutes relevance, and for whom?
