It's good to hear people who made one of the best and most infuential games say that it was an artistic choice.
It's actually kinda cool that my assumption was nowhere near generous enough because it means someone way smarter than me agrees with my point.

Thanks for clarifying, I did not know that but it makes sense.
People tend to discredit the idea of using lower framerates in video games for effect a lot because latency is viewed as bad (and it is in most games).
The people running the site aren't really. They're a bunch of tech bro idiots.
The userbase just doesn't consist of a high concentration of nazis.
I don't know how an ideal solution would look like. To my knowledge, decomps at least give options and potential for compatibility with future technology.
But I don't like how this is considered the "final form" by so many when the port doesn't look as good as it does on original hardware.
I realize CRTs will not be around forever. In a hundred years, TP or ICO will still be around but CRTs will not be cheap and common to find anymore. Original hardware isn't future proof.
On the other hand, artistic choices will be lost if the transition to digital and high resolutions is permanent.
I totally agree.
Like I said, I think it is a great win for preservation to have a decomp of an old game, but I want to bring up that I don't think 4k uncapped framerate is the perfect silver bullet solution a lot of people believe it is.
I think there needs to be more acknowledgement.
Whew that's a lotta words for saying "I think TP looks better on original hardware than on PC"
So when a 480i 30 hz game gets ported to and supports 4k 144fps, most people naturally assume that's better because bigger "number=better" or something just because it's true of post 2000s modern games made for that hardware? Why? Why is low poly 480i 30fps not also an art style like pixel art?
If the SNES could have had 4k 120 fps ultra graphics, I'm sure the devs would've used those as well, but it can't do that and so games used pixel art. And so the hardware informed the artistic choices and the artistic choices tend to look best on that hardware, unmodified by bs filters and LEDs.
Sure ICO being 240i 30 fps has to do with it being developed as a PS1 game that got pushed to PS2, but the choices are still very intentional and deliberate. The animations are almost all manually rigged and the art style was obviously made for a low resolution and CRT lines.
Ico native 240i on PS2 to emulator in HD comparison from this post https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/1kl8qv4/ico_on_ps2_at_native_240p_vs_pc_emulation_at/
So why is it that when some HD port of an old game comes out, people are like "finally, the game looks good!"
This might be goomba fallacy, but I really don't see that many people defending 480i or 240i as much as people defend pixel art or similar artistic choices.
Similarly, even in the animation sphere, people agree that AI interpolated frames suck shit and that the artistic intent of the chosen framerate is paramount and the claim that "more=always" better is stupid and wrong.
The DK image with emulator pixel smoothing filter saying "lookin' good" when it's obviously smearing all over the image and makes it look shitty, usually posted to point out how smoother=/=better in older games.
Part of the reason this bothers me so much is because everyone (in the video game art sphere anyway) agrees that pixel art is an art style and that emulator filters that smooth out the pixels are trash and many think that older games look best on CRTs due to the way they were made.
Oh and also I don't think this applies to all games equally. I think Monkey Ball for example looks better on modern screens because the simplistic look really benefits from sharper lines.
I just think if games made specific artistic choices for specific hardware, they tend to look best on that.
Also for anyone who doesn't know this, I'm not against the PC ports or even playing the game on PC in 4k or anything and it's not just this game in particular.
I've been saying the exact same things about MHtri for many years now.
6th and even 7th gen games often look best on original hardware.
In PS1-N64 games, you can easily claim the low res textures, polys and prerendered backgrounds work on a CRT better and people believe you, but that TP on GC is the best looking version when TP HD on WiiU and now a PC port with 4k textures and unlocked framerate exist is a tougher argument to make.
Being in HD doesn't make the game look better because a lot of the artistic choices don't really work in 1080p as well as they did in 480i.
I say this about FF7-9 as well and a lot of people share this opinion, but 6th gen games are imo very overlooked in this aspect because they aren't as obvious.
TP was a game made for CRTs and the color and lighting choices, bloom and fog effects massively benefit from a CRT because of the dark color spectrum, pixel blending and ghosting inherent to these displays, plus the textures and polygons have enough fidelity to look good on 480 vertical lines.
I have a very particular pet peeve with people thinking that SD visuals and particularly 6th gen games don't hold up visually, because they don't look as good as modern games when played on emulator with HD upscaling on modern LED displays.
These games were made for 480i, that's how they should look
I don't wanna blindly hate on the port because it clearly is a huge deal (positive) for game preservation and options are never bad, but with these options comes the fear that artistic integrity gets ignored in the future as this will be for many the best or only way to play it for years.
Ok so here's the thing: I like playing old games upscaled. PPSSPP is my favorite way to play MHp3rd and the game benefits massively from being HD because it got an official texture upgrade and was made with LCD widescreen displays in mind.
TP is not such a game though.
I'm very glad TP is getting two PC ports and I doubt that any of the fans and supporters of the ports will really object to the statement that it is a game that holds up, so I don't want to prescribe malicious intent to a group of people I don't know, but the Courage Reborn trailer looks kinda...
consent is really hot tbh
