A landlord called Standard Communities is trying to buy Ellis Lakeview.
Tenants demand a signed guarantee of basic living standards:
✅ Routine maintenance
✅ Reliable trash pickup
✅ A plan for emergency relocation

Tenants return to Court on April 22nd and will not allow a deal to ends the Code Enforcement Case without guaranteeing basic protections: routine maintenance, trash collection, and emergency relocation if the water, hear or elevators shut down!
❌ Waukegan: Tenants lost hot water and onsite security after a similar sale. bit.ly/4emkq2X
❌ Aurora: Tenants faced asbestos exposure and two-month delays on basic repairs. bit.ly/fox-shore-ap...
❌ Chicago: Tenants were relocated to units without functioning showers.
Because of their cowardice, tenants have to just hope that the new landlord will follow through on their promises. But hope is not a strategy, other landlords promising big rehabs have routinely failed on their promises:
Building Commissioner Hopkins and then city attorney Steve Mckenzie LIED to tenants at Ellis Lakeview.
After promising to oppose a deal that shut out the Tenant Association, they completely flip flopped.
Tenants return to Court on April 22nd.

We are calling on the City to stop the "trust us" narrative and start protecting the people who actually live in these buildings.

We are not done fighting, whether in the hallway, or in the courtroom. Five years of litigation and tenant actions, and still no Consent Decree that meets tenants’ basic need for emergency temporary relocation.

Stand with constituents, not developers.
Tenants to the City: Don’t throw us under the bus.
On 3/25, Ellis Lakeview & Indian Trails tenant leaders went to City Hall demanding action: restore relocation protections, finalize long-promised agreements, and stop sidelining tenants in decisions about their homes.
🚨 TAKE ACTION: Tell HUD to #KeepFamiliesTogether & housed.

This rule would rip families apart & push people toward homelessness during a housing crisis.

Get to know one of our tenant leaders...Mr. Murray!
Brave leaders like Mr. Murray are living proof of what it means to stand up for yourself and your community despite the fear. Without him, and stories like these, many others would not know that victory is possible.
A huge victory for JASC and our fellow plaintiffs. We’re fighting for tenants at both the individual and systemic level—stay tuned and keep following along!

Ms. B didn’t stay silent... and it paid off! After dealing with missing baseboards, holes in her cabinets, and no blinds in her unit, she spoke up and fought for the repairs she deserved. And she won.

👋👋 We at Jane Addams Senior Caucus homed in the windy city of Chicago embody a holistic model of organizing. Grounded in an approach that centers community, legal action, and social welfare, the successes we see are rooted in firm foundations that tend to the entire wellbeing of our members.
More victories to celebrate for one of our tenant's, Ms. T! Her unit was full of repair needs. She worked tirelessly to document, report, and escalate these issues to management. We couldn't be prouder to report that these strategies WORKED and now all repairs have been made.
If you have a medical condition that prevents you from meeting the new work requirements for SNAP eligibility, the Department of Human Services is now accepting requests for medical exemptions.

Mr. R was fed up. Every day he had to tiptoe around big cracks in his tub, and it was only getting worse. With the support of the Tenant Association he documented the issue, emailed it to management, and escalated to HUD. He refused to let up, and his persistence was rewarded!
A belated Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at JASC! We love any day to celebrate the love in our lives. It reminds us who we fight for and why we fight so hard.
With the support of the Ellis Lakeview Tenant Association and just 7 days of collective escalation, Ms. W got a brand-new stove and oven 🔥👏
At her first tenant meeting, she said it herself: this win only happened because she wasn’t alone.
When tenants stand together, we win. 💪🏽🏠

Fox Shore Apartments was sold at the end of October 2025. Since then tenants suffered a period with beyond unacceptable conditions. The tenant Association is more unified than ever. Below is a photo of a recent hybrid meeting organized, and facilitated by new tenant leaders!!
Tenant members at Lakeside Tower wasted no time kicking off the new year with, A FULL BUILDING WIDE CANVASS! JASC and tenant leaders knocked every door collecting issues and building new relationships to actualize their tenant leadership structure and autonomously organized union
Ms. T fought alone for 3 years. Nothing changed.
This is what happens when tenants aren’t left to fight alone and when you develop a holistic organizing model of direct support, legal services and is designed to win!
We never get tired of celebrating victories, because what may seem small can mean everything to the people living it. In November, one of our tenants at Damen Court, working alongside our organizers, won long-overdue renovations to her bathroom and kitchen.
These words came directly from our team- shaped by our goals for 2026 and the progress we’ve already made. This word cloud isn’t just a reflection, it’s a guide. We’ll be using it all year to stay focused, aligned, and accountable to ourselves and the communities we serve!
Last week the Crestwood Tenants Association took time to celebrate the holidays and the New Year as a community. When we take the time to get to know our neighbors we find unexpected points of connection and unity that remind us that their fight is also our fight.
This victory wasn’t just about stopping an eviction. It was about restoring stability, rebuilding trust, and helping Ms. Butler transform from someone facing hardships alone into an active member of a union ready to win long-term change.
