Say hello to our newest spider monkey, Shep! He's ~2 years old & we rescued him from the exotic pet trade in April, after he'd been in the possession of U.S. FWS and the Houston Zoo.

Baboons Olive and Saffron enjoying enrichment activities under the San Antonio sun!🌞
PPI’s enrichment coordinator says of the four types of enrichment, food is the most popular. Encouraging natural foraging behavior, we hide their food in a paper tube, a pile of shavings, a puzzle feeder, and more!
It’s birthday season at PPI!
Bubba, Lisa and Herbie celebrated theirs this month, and Cheetah's turning 51 on April 1st!
It’s not too late to send a fruit party their way! Visit primarilyprimates.org/product-cate... to make a donation of a veggie party, grape party, banana bash, etc. THANK YOU!
Meet Pigtail macaque Skeeter!
Skeeter was rescued by us in 2017 and is our only pigtail macaque resident. He had been purchased from a breeder in New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina and then kept as a pet before being rescued.
Today he thrives on a healthy lifestyle. He loves avocados!
There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to grooming! The chimps aren’t just keeping each other clean—they’re also deepening bonds, resolving conflicts and sometimes just relaxing, like a human having day at the spa!!
Here's Effie grooming Laura:
Yes the weather outside is frightful. We're hanging in there!!
We wanted to let you know our residents are safe and sound. Our generators kicked in as soon as power went out. Our staff is superb.
Say hi to Ivor the kinkajou! Kinkajous are one of the non-primate species that call PPI home.
Oh, my! Three male capuchins, and 2 are very endangered crested capuchins, arrived from a west coast sanctuary winding down. Their rescue is our delight.
A special thank you from FoA president, Priscilla Feral ✨ We couldn’t do what we do without you! Thank you for your generous support in 2025, please consider giving to FoA as we wrap up the year and prepare to continue our mission in 2026. ❤️ friendsofanimals.org
Want to do lunch with macaque Teddy? I didn't think so. Let's send a donation to Primarily Primates sanctuary instead.

Everyone say hi to Jean!
Wait for the end to see Effie go 🤪
Last weekend, 2-year-old Sybil, a spider monkey, was found in a San Antonio yard with an eye injury and wearing a diaper.
A few hours later, Animal Care Services delivered her to PPI, where she’s now eating, vocalizing and playing!
Please consider a donation to support Sybil's lifetime of care ❤️

We're heartbroken to share that chimpanzee Jason passed at age 33.
Rescued from research, Jason spent 25 years at PPI. He was known for his smile, infectious joy and love of treats.
He lived closely with his companion Baxter, who will miss him dearly--as will we all.
Rest easy, Jason ❤️
Pant-hoots for the airwomen and airmen from Lackland Air Force Base who recently volunteered with us. They made enrichment items, chopped produce and organized our winter barn.
And of course, fell in love with Baxter, who was born in 1999 in a lab that is now defunct.
THANK YOU!

PPI applauds Congress’ reintroduction of the Captive Primate Safety Act, which would end the pet primate trade in the US.
PPI knows all too well that primates belong in the wild and not exploited as pets--over half of our primates are ex-pets.

In a sanctuary setting, it's our job to introduce variation for the animals to keep their brains and bodies active.
That's where our enrichment coordinator and San Antonio native, Laura, comes in!

We held a birthday bash for Emma, one of the four chimps we just welcomed!
Our newest residents are looking for sponsors; you can become a sponsor here: primarilyprimates.org/.../don...
Support is greatly appreciated; it costs approximately $35,000-45,000/year to provide care for one chimpanzee.
