I really appreciate this comprehensive overview and response, Micheál, and you've left me with a lot to think about! I do agree that way, way too often people write about things like this without thinking about the why it's happening, and we lose our humanity when we do that.

I used to be very anti faregating and find myself more interested in it bc it seems anticarceral compared to having guards/cops; I want public spaces to be truly public, and I hate having having to think of things like faregates, but I also don't want ppl to blow smoke in my 80 year old dad's face.

I guess my question to you partially is if there is anything else we can do other than resource folks who need help on the system - I'm frustrated by how slow that can seem to make any change and in the meantime ridership stays stagnant or keeps falling in part bc of this perception of crime

I appreciate your take on this! I do feel very conflicted over this. Most of my friends are women who depend on public transit and have shifted from taking the train to the bus because they feel increasingly unsafe there.
