Large tabby cat dives for the plate, held off only by my daughter's arm.
Daughter gently lifts the cat off the table, the cat still very much in "let me at that food" mode.
Eid Mubarak. Here is my daughter fending off a Beirut cat who belongs to the cafe but wanders in and out depending on the menu. If you celebrate, may your meal be as tempting as the makdous bi labneh was to this kitty.

I feel Jon wouldn’t mind my showing you the first draft of this, because I thought it great, but he knew the language needed to be toned down just a smidge :-)
He really knew how to stab a finger right into the chest of those who needed it

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.
But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.
He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.
He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”
What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

A letter to the director of the CIA from Senator Ron Wyden saying he has sent a classified letter that expressed concerns.
This is how Sen. Ron Wyden clues the public into activity that he finds extremely alarming. He does a press release about a letter he sent to the director of the CIA that basically says, 'I want to make sure you saw the classified letter I sent early today.' www.wyden.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

Well, that and white society ignoring & oppressing everyone who isn’t a cis het white person (AND letting privileged rich white bastards run rampant) for the last umpteen centuries instead of Doing Fucking Better.

Sad? Eating the rich works for me. 🤷🏼♀️
Feeding them to sharks and crocodiles works even better, I reckon, though, cos they can still be alive for it & whatever’s deeply, deeply wrong with them won’t have much of an opportunity to filter up through the food chain.

Almost three years ago, my editor called me early one November morning. A wildfire had sparked near a town called Paradise, he said. Could I go? (1/13)

I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated.

Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.)
But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp.
A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world

If anyone hasn't cancelled their Washington Post subscription yet, now would be a good time. (I cancelled mine when they pulled their endorsement of Harris just before the 2024 election.)

Maybe if she drove over the line and reported on Russia's side of the war, she could get her job back.

A Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Minneapolis is really a recognition of people power and it’s the first time a whole city has been put forward for the prize.

Remember her name: Aliya Rahman
Her testimony is everything and it deserves to be heard, by everyone. Decide for yourself.
It’s powerful. It’s gut-wrenching. And no one should have to survive what she did.

Nooooo! I only just saw this.
I just spent $88 (Australian) to buy a copy of the Portuguese-language edition of The Jakarta Method; I already have the English version & am going to use them both together as a way to extend my Portuguese language studies.
