Our new piece out today in Times Higher Education about the threats to Geography in the UK - particularly fieldwork - please do share. It links to a recent snapshot survey on the challenges being faced in UK HE, which highlights the inequities of the challenges, but also fears of what is yet to come

Human Geography at Leicester is facing closure. Staff contracts are to end in June 2026; students are to be relocated to other universities, or taught out by a maximum of two (!) teaching-only staff. Other departments and subjects are facing closure, too. Please join the demo!
Spread the word and make Leicester realise the damage they are doing to their international reputation
Hi Loretta, in that I co-wrote it with Leicester colleagues in my role as VP for Research and Higher Education at the RGS, then yes it is.

This week the first article from my PhD was published! This piece explores the belief that our planet is hurtling towards self-inflicted extinction. By working closely with Extinction Rebellion, I examine how demands to halt planetary extinction shape the future.

In addition we know from analysis of grant application success rates that those who are non-white, + to a slightly lesser extent those who are not-men, are awarded far fewer percentages of grants relative to both their number in academia + how many applications they submit
As others have noted, promotion often depends on getting grants, but so does permanency and the transition from precarity and, increasingly, surviving compulsory redundancy.

I had a nightmare last night that I was the only staff member left in my department + I had to teach all 5 degrees by myself + when I complained I got sent on a resilience training course … in case you are wondering what British higher education feels like right now
🤣
"There is nobody within government looking at the university system as a whole and thinking, ‘What do we want this to achieve, both for students but also for the country?' ... But is it easier [for ministers] to just watch incrementally universities go to the wall on a slow burn basis?"

I have not. I will look it up. Thanks
Peri-menopause seems dominated by stories of loss + grief, but I have shifted to a space of assertive unashamed self-care. My status as an older women as a relief from gendered social reproductive expectations. A celebration of the power of being whatever I want to be - hope I am not alone in this
Anyone else experiencing peri-menopause as a release? Not withstanding the pain, surge of hormones etc, I am now enjoying a lightness + freedom from this major transition

Just completed 3 days of training on how to be a Group Coach with Catalyst14, + am buzzing on how useful it will be in universities. Learning group dynamics, listening skills, + how to create the conditions for generative dialogue seem like vital skills for all right now!
None of those newspapers (or the BBC) that gleefully ran stories when the EHRC gave trans people a shoeing will now report on the EHRC admitting they (and hence those stories) were wrong. Are those outlets craven - or dishonest?
