1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better?
This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

Remote islands and villages dependent on oil/diesel for electricity generation can eliminate CO2 emissions and save money with a net-zero electricity system built on wind and solar with storage.

Two former Department of Energy staffers warn we’re doing carbon removal all wrong Sucking down greenhouse gas to cancel out corporate emissions may come at the expense of more pressing public needs.

New story from me: @gruberte.bsky.social & Shuchi Talati have issued a stark warning about the way the carbon removal sector is developing: www.technologyreview.com/2023/12/12/1...

OPEC’s letter conveys an old message with a new tone. It says “they are coming for us -- for real now”. Bad news for COP28, though few had high expectations.

But NB: in a sense the letter confirms that the energy transition has never had more momentum. So gotta keep the moment going.

Global warming on track for 2.9C as greenhouse gases keep rising, UN says Chances of keeping within 1.5C threshold put at a low 14%

"Global warming on track for 2.9C as greenhouse gases keep rising, UN says"
... assuming that countries magically meet their Paris commitments, and other wildly unrealistic thinking! Let's be clear: the path we are on is worse than a 3C rise.

Contrary to some popular narratives, our results suggest that impactful individual behavior change need not preclude support for ambitious climate policies.

Individual climate action may, in fact, go hand-in-hand with calling for and enacting systemic changes.

Shocking stat from the latest Lancet Countdown: in 2017–21, 40 banks collectively invested $489 billion annually in fossil fuels, with 52% upping their lending from 2010–16.

The biggest fossil fuel lenders? Citi, Wells Fargo, and JP Morgan.

‘It’s Like Our Country Exploded’: Canada’s Year of Fire Endless evacuations, unimaginable smoke and heat, 45 million acres burned — is this the nation’s new normal?

By the end of September, more than half of the world’s countries could fit inside the land burned this year in Canada.

“I can’t think of any analogy for the extent to which the modern records were not only broken but destroyed here,” says climate scientist John Abatzoglou.
