1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better?
This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

Thank you so much! ☺️
People in law academia: would you have any recommendations on papers focusing on the financial crisis of 2008 and legal responses? Thank you! 😃

New story from me: @gruberte.bsky.social & Shuchi Talati have issued a stark warning about the way the carbon removal sector is developing: www.technologyreview.com/2023/12/12/1...
😂😂😂 don’t forget that he also shows up to tell you that you’ve lost your streak and need to pay him to have it back.
OPEC’s letter conveys an old message with a new tone. It says “they are coming for us -- for real now”. Bad news for COP28, though few had high expectations.
But NB: in a sense the letter confirms that the energy transition has never had more momentum. So gotta keep the moment going.
Delighted to share this invitation:

Contrary to some popular narratives, our results suggest that impactful individual behavior change need not preclude support for ambitious climate policies.
Individual climate action may, in fact, go hand-in-hand with calling for and enacting systemic changes.

Shocking stat from the latest Lancet Countdown: in 2017–21, 40 banks collectively invested $489 billion annually in fossil fuels, with 52% upping their lending from 2010–16.
The biggest fossil fuel lenders? Citi, Wells Fargo, and JP Morgan.

Excellent initiative! And nice to see that GNHRE is here :)
By the end of September, more than half of the world’s countries could fit inside the land burned this year in Canada.
“I can’t think of any analogy for the extent to which the modern records were not only broken but destroyed here,” says climate scientist John Abatzoglou.

Open letter by Israeli international law experts:
The taking of hostages is a blatant violation of international law. We call for the immediate & unconditional release of all hostages. Pending their release, they are all entitled to be treated with humanity & respect. >>
Precisely the reason I dislike Article 31(3)(c) VCLT.
What is life in 21st century but the constant reminder that we are in the twilight of our existence and we’re taking all the beauty of our planet with us?
