My annual 4th of July thought: Instead of cheering for people who are competing to see how many hot dogs they can stuff into their faces, how about we have a contest to see how much food we can deliver to people who are struggling to put meals on their family’s table?
I grew up in Texas (the state), and I agree with you. My youthful memories are of a warm, welcoming, open-armed place. Sadly, a lot has changed since then, and not for the better.

Without going all Martin Niemöller here, I do think that it's bad not to speak up for immigrants, transgender Americans, civil servants, women, Ukraine, and everyone else the MAGA bullies are going after. We're beyond picking and choosing whom to defend. It's time to stand up and speak out.

You really have to be careful with these “block lists” that others assemble. In this one, it’s mostly MAGA nonsense to be sure - but there are some accounts in there that definitely don’t belong. Best, I think, to avoid these shortcuts, and just block them yourself individually, as you see them.
I do not like this era of “celebrity politics”. Living in these times makes me think of Harlan Ellison’s 1977 essay about the effects of mass media, “Revealed at Last! What Killed the Dinosaurs! And You Don’t Look So Terrific Yourself.”
