In Ancient Greece, owls represented Athena, goddess of wisdom, an association many still have with owls today. š”

This year I will keep up with my skincare routine. A portrait of a prince. His skin is glowing. Plump, good color, lit-from-within. Seriously, skincare goals.
This year I will channel main-character energy. A woman poses, wrapped in fabric, looking like an absolute diva. She is an icon and she knows it.
This year I will bedrot less. A man lies in bed, surrounded by flames. Another man is at the foot of the bed blowing the flames onto the man, as if to force him out of bed with the power of fire.
This year I will embrace whimsy. A ballerina en pointe wears a clown costume, complete with neck ruff and ruffled, ribbon-embellished tutu.
This year I will make more art. A woman plays a lute, sheet music open on her lap, looking directly at the viewer.
Portrait of James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle, clothed in black robes and posed in front of a tapestry curtain. Art Affirmations for the new year.

Black-and-white photo of a ballerina en pointe, in an arabesque position, one arm curved over her head and the other extended behind her. She wears a ruffled dance costume that includes a multi-layered skirt and a billowy blouse.
Seven dancers dressed in Greco-Roman costumes pose in a grove of trees. They appear to be in conversation.
Two dancers in Greco-Roman costumes. The first stands with her back to the other, looking upward out of frame with her left hand raised in the air. Her companion leans toward her with a playful expressionāarms bent and palms facing upward as if carrying an invisible platter. Is she questioning? Offering something? Guiding her companion forward?
Black-and-white photograph of a dancer outdoors. She is dressed in a Greco-Roman costume, her head tossed back, one arm over her chest, and one leg in the air, as if she is dramatically marching forward.
From the Sugarplum Fairy to Dany Kaye to your coworker at the office party, #dance is an iconic part of the holidays. š

The first fish option. Likely supposed to be a flounder, it resembles a spotted dog more than anything else. Its face looks very happy. As if the dog is being presented with a treat.
The second fish is fully grimacing, its mouth downturned and teeth visible. It is blue with painful-looking red eyes.
The third fish is very roundā potato-shaped. Seen from above, it looks up at the viewer with perfectly round eyes, perfectly round pupils, and a vacant expression. Nevertheless, it appears to be smiling. No thoughts, only vibes.
A rather nervous-looking⦠whale? Itās supposed to be a whale for sure, but itās also very furry-looking. Long sideburns sweep up behind the creatureās face like two massive cat ears. A tuft of fur extends below the creatureās chin. It has an adorable cat-like nose. Itās a whale-cat of some sort, and itās clearly hiding some embarrassing secret.
Which fish fits your Friday mood? š
In the painting Untitled (2019), we see a group of people lost at sea, wearing red life jackets and waving their arms, swimming to survive. There is no boat, safety net, or someone trying to save them: they are alone, struggling not to drown metaphorically and literally. The movement of their arms and the pools of vivid watercolor give a sense of loss, danger, and anxiety.
A quote by the artist: "I am from many places. I live with that duality and multiplicity in my mind, and in my soul, and in my body."

Photograph by Josefina Guadalupe Cota Chavez. A female mariachi, wearing typical mariachi costume that includes a large sombrero, a black suit, and a large red bow around the neck, holds her trumpet in manicured hands, looking down so the only visible part of her face is her red lips peeking from the embroidered brim of her hat. Behind her is a mural of a woman looking upward.
"I feel blessed to be part of the Mariachi community in LA, and canāt wait to continue to develop this body of work to continue highlighting such musicians. Given the current situation affecting our community, I feel more proud about my work than ever."

Image depicting a playful comic setup. On the left, a person appears thoughtful, with a question mark above their head, next to a photo of an Eastern Whip-poor-will. Above her, a caption asks: "Does the name 'Eastern Whip-poor-will imply the existence of a Western Whip-poor-won't?" On the right, the same photo of an Eastern Whip-poor-will is superimposed over a cartoon wild west desert town. The bird wears a cartoon cowboy outfit stands. A speech bubble, pointing to the bird, reads "Sorry, maāam. No can do." a reference to his being a whip poor "won't", not "will." Western Whip=poor-wills are not a species that exists. The absurdity of the image is meant to make that clear.
Nocturnal birders in western North America may encounter several species of nightjar, from Common Poorwills to Chuck-will's-widow. But, alas, this Western Whip-poor-wonāt lives only in our daydreams. ššŖ¶
