We have many things in common there.
Documentation is always good. Btw, there are countless videos on YouTube in which people who have switched to Linux share their experiences. Just search for "I've switched to linux" or something similar.
He's here on BlueSky btw: @ttrpginsights.bsky.social
I wish you all the best! Enjoy! It's a good, save decision. π§π
But this newcomer will not stay and settle down if you shy them away. Seriously, it is precisely this ivory-tower mentality that is hurting Linux.
I have made my opinion clear, so Iβm leaving this conversation.
What indispensable, essential benefit justifies the risk that the user might get frustrated and switch away from Linux?
And the OP didn't mention any super-specialized software that he absolutely needs. To me, that sounds like normal desktop work.
That doesn't answer my question:
Why would a newcomer need the latest software - which carries the risk of frustrating errors - when they can handle all use cases just fine with well-established, reliable software?
Why risk frustration and anger? For someone who is new and can't help himself?
I'm looking forward to it! Reminds me a bit of the Behind the Claw podcast section "My Galaxy". :-)
So the Vargr spies have made it into Solomani space?
Why? Especially in the case of the OP?

Newcomers don't need bleeding edge OS, they need stuff that just works out of the box for 99.9% of their use cases.
And for the remaining 0.1% they need the biggest support base that's out there, and that's usually Ubuntu or Mint.
The support base for top notch fringe OS is usually close to zero.
There we go. π
Never heard of it & had to google it. That's not a good sign. And I worked for Red Hat and use Fedora on a daily basis and I'm making a living with linux since 25 years.
Still, I wouldn't recommend it to a newcomer.
I'm not convinced by your posts.
Keep it stupid simple for newcomers.
I disagree. I know lots of people who listened to some self proclaimed "expert", then choose a distro that requires 10+ years of command line and kernel driver compiling experience who were so frustrated and disgusted that they never tried linux again and bought an expensive Mac.
If you have a better option - let me know.
A page that asks for your use cases is the only thing that makes sense imho. Requirements are too different.
Linux Mint is a good choice, I've tried it myself.
And you always have the option to safely try from a live USB stick first before you install it on your system.
You might want to look into CachyOS or Bazzite. They have excellent Steam integration.
Silo is back on AppleTV with Season 3 on July 3!
