Things shown by 1926 census that don’t chime with modern discourse

Big one for me is marriage age and children. Ireland at that time had a v high average age of marriage for women, and also large families. Something to say to the next pronatalist weirdo who thinks childbearing should start at 16.

Its really concerning this fact has to be explicitly stated. I am actually dumbfounded ppl ran with Leo Varadkars inappropriate framing. Rural communities are not a monolith. There are many things to take from these protests but urban subsidising rural areas is not one of them. Well said below

This is brilliant reporting in constraint circumstances Seamus. Really torn on it. There should be community consultation in large developments such as this particularly when social amenities are impacted. Comes across like ppl not knowing how to do politics across board. A wedge issue for division

I might have to compromise a little here. That is possible solution. Thanks for engaging Susan. Nice to chatting to you :)

Nearly half of urban dwellers use natural gas as their main energy source for heating.

In contrast, 41% of rural dwellers use kerosene. Couple that with increased dependence on diesel/petrol for transport and rural livelihoods.

Politics of fuel has a geography.

I can see that a little with younger students in my class. Incredibly smart & capable but not always confident discussing material. Its definitely challenging going back to study yet getting so much more from it this time round. Age & life experience really help connect with material.

I did a nature walk on invertebrates recently where ecologist pointed out this wonder of nature.....incredible symbiosis between plant & insect life. A beautifully captured photo of it here below.

In complete agreement. Only disadvantage you are not as freshminded...44 & doing full time Masters 🫩 There are days I think, Good God what was I thinking of. Still a very enthusiastic mature student all the same! More life experience & confidence in tackling coursework.

The resolve to remain flight free is wavering mainly due to a partner dying for a sun holiday where neither of us have time, energy or money to travel overland...& yet I always argue we are too motivated by convenience. I moralise on shaky ground! War in Iran will definitely impact flights for ppl.

Galliard Battaglia - Samuel Scheidt / arr. Philip Jones
Galliard Battaglia - Samuel Scheidt / arr. Philip Jones YouTube video by DECHO

Today, @rte.ie replaced Galliard Battaglia as the opening theme tune for @sundaymiscellany.bsky.social with something from the suite for the station's "new on-air audio identity".

The new identity for Sunday Miscellany doesn't work.

This ⬇️ And its playing out more severely in Cuba. Our deep unequal economic system is going to embed further injustice in response to this crisis.

She did mention ditching flying as a harder decision to make in future. It was a good column & important we live more lightly but does feel its playing around at margins. It will require radical change to the way we eat, travel & work even. Well done on 11 year flight free streak..7 & counting!

We must all work together to protect democracy, says Catherine Connolly | BreakingNews The president was addressing an international democracy conference in Spain during her first overseas trip.

“Connolly called for “honest reflection” on how this point has been reached, having “moved from the crystal-clear language of the #UN charter championing #HumanRights to the crystal-clear language that now champions ‘might is right’. The answer…”

... Lebanon, Iran & in their own country shouldnt blind us to the rise of one of the most hateful prejudices which has particular provenance in Europe & not helped either by social media. I just think that type of thinking plays to malign prejudices even if one doesn't harbour those same prejudices

Lynn this is an unfortunate statement to make. The actions of Israeli govt may increase salience of Jewish communities abroad but doesn't allow for antisemitism that may make them a subsequent target for that increased visibility. The justifiable outrage at Israeli govt & military actions in Gaza,..

We still don’t know how much energy AI consumes Companies must give us the chance to understand the environmental impact of the tech we use

Using big LLMs for basic queries is 'like turning on stadium floodlights to look for your keys' - this is good on the AI environmental questions.

Completely agree & thats a wonderful summation of how it captured the senses! The colours in particular felt almost jewel like to me. Just a gorgeous tone! An incredibly arresting piece of cinema that was daring & novel for its time.

Oh this is an incredible film Eamonn. Thanks for sharing! Distinctly remember watching it during Covid lockdown ....& the colours, the cinematography & mounting unease & paranoia.

8 years ago, I told a story which changed my life forever. Shortly after, an old pal from college asked if he could turn it into a film.

So I am DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE that 'Me, Myself & Mary' is not only finished, but has been chosen to lead the Tribeca Festival's animated shorts roster this year.

Such a a lovely outcome from that wonderfully wierd encounter Seamas. Your story & a thread about a last minute Christmas shopping jaunt at a Dublin M&S are simply best long form comic threads across Twitter/Bluesky...ever. We need such levity in this dark scary would of ours!

Urban green spaces are scarce, while climate and wealth impact access A study of 862 European cities reveals a lack of adequate access to green space. It also highlights a climate-driven geographical difference and a clear socioeconomic divide.

New study shows that just 2-4% of people living in Dublin and Cork (and less than 2% on Waterford, Limerick and Galway) benefits from the full 3-30-300 urban greening principle. That's way behind most other European cities studied.
