The lovely folks @nature.com asked me to review @cryopolitics.com & @klausdodds.bsky.social's book *Unfrozen* 📘 A great introduction for newcomers to the Arctic regions, Bennett & Dodds manage to "make the complex accessible and the mundane memorable" 🧑🚀 ❄️

Multiple times! Last time however in 2015.
Many years ago I had a Visiting Erskine Fellowship at Canterbury. It worked not least because I was welcomed and embedded in Gateway Antarctica and Geography Department activities. But in the end it was the kindness of colleagues in Christchurch and beyond in NZ that made it so memorable.
I tried in Border Wars (Penguin 2022) to show how geography works in a more dynamic and elemental way.
super sea monsterly display at Foyles's for the new paperback edition, lusty stuff
@foylesforbooks.bsky.social book of the month, shucks
I told students jobs such as "Global Geopolitics Lead" exist in the private sector. Considering today...maybe they'll believe me. I suggest they follow @gmbutts.bsky.social @reecejones.bsky.social and @klausdodds.bsky.social (would love a hangout right about now).

@bolshierowbot.bsky.social, @klausdodds.bsky.social,
An embroidery hoop rests on a pale neutral work surface. In the hoop is a Shetland navigation chart screen-printed faintly onto undyed calico fabric then painted a bit and sewn a lot mostly with running stitch in shades of blue and white over the sea and back stitch in brown on the coastline of Shetland which is fiddly and wiggly.

In the pre Christmas corset madness it looks like I forgot to post pics of this when I finished it. #Shetland navigation chart #screenprinting on calico fabric then painted a bit and sewn a lot. The coastline of Shetland was particularly tiresome, but worth it in the end!
This extract from Unfrozen by Mia Bennett and @klausdodds.bsky.social shows how Donald Trump’s second administration has transformed Greenland into an international flashpoint.

The U.S. controls whether Venezuelan barrels can legally reach major buyers and also where sale proceeds are held and how they are disbursed. Qatar is going to be a clearing house.
And thank you.
Cover of the book: "Unfrozen: The Fight for the Future of the Arctic" by Mia Bennett and Klaus Dodds.
Just finished "Unfrozen: The Fight for the Future of the Arctic" by Mia Bennett and @klausdodds.bsky.social. Highly recommend for those interested in the Arctic's past, present & future. Amazingly detailed, with the added depth of personal experiences. #ArcticGovernance #Geopolitics #ClimateChange
V good: Jonny Dymond with #US’ first Ambassador at large for #Arctic Affairs Michael Sfraga, with a plan for investment in #Greenland *not* takeover; @klausdodds.bsky.social Prof of Geopolitics, on Arctic interests+actions of US, Russia+China; Daniel Yergin on politics+trade+Denmark’s Louise Elholm.
A little reminder, in light of talk about ‘security’, Greenland holds acces to both the scientific knowledge and resources that can help guide us all away from climate disaster.….

At a time when ALL nations should be collaborating in order to secure a safe & sustainable future, do we REALLY want a world shaped by bullying superpowers willing to add ’geopolitical fuel’ to a warming Arctic? Great piece from @klausdodds.bsky.social

I will keep you posted. Today Greenland, tomorrow…….
Something I reported on last year was how geopolitical aggression (and funding cuts) harms vital science efforts.
“It makes science diplomacy virtually impossible,” @klausdodds.bsky.social told me.
