When you watch the James Whale Frankenstein films back to back(as I did one crisp October evening at the Mahoning Drive in) it’s amazing how well they hold up, as halves of the same story and as standalone films. Bride is especially impressive when you see how Whale spat in the face of the Hays Code

There are so many writers who would be so brilliant as spokespeople for real change, so many people who should know that now, in the age of international fascism, action speaks so much louder than any given thousand word essay on how PTA is woke now.
I worry for the complacent ones.

And I am particularly angry and bitter at those who never used their voice to constantly speak against the powerful institutions they were close to.

It’s easy to be reactionary against arts writing wholesale, and sometimes I can be because I’m bitter- it gave me a place to tuck my head in the sand pretend I was saying something because the art I loved was claiming the same. I know now that there are great arts writers, but the best are activists

SWP are notoriously bad. Never true allies (in it for paper sales + visible pledge to their cause: you can't move for their placards at events). They spin their fire-brand activism to sound good but at heart, they're rotten. Legitimate important fights against racism etc are steamrollered by them.
