“So, are you coming down to us?”

She cast one last look at the street below and nodded, deftly jumping down from the windowsill to the floor—once again captivating her old friend with her unmatched feminine grace.

Perhaps the years hadn’t passed so unnoticed for him after all.

They both glanced down at their intertwined hands.

“Disgusting,” Amadeus said, laughter in his voice.

“Agreed,” the cat replied just as lightly. “What do humans even see in this?”

He lifted his gaze until their eyes met. In them, just like always, there was that youthful, never-fading spark of mischief and joy. But now she was beginning to notice something else more and more often—attachment, maybe even love, in his gaze.

He walked further in, paused for a moment, then first leaned against the windowsill and with a quick motion hopped up onto it, settling beside her and mirroring her pose.

She looked at him with curiosity, smiling at some private thought, and gently placed her hand over his.

She had seen thousands of lives, and despite the same mistakes repeating over and over, she was almost never bored watching over them.

Amadeus entered the room.
“Ah, you’re doing your favorite thing again. Lea and I were waiting for you at dinner.”

Sometimes there’s nothing else left, when you’re just a spirit living inside a host who isn’t exactly happy about your presence.
But over time, she had learned to enjoy it—studying people and their behavior.

Alyx sat on the windowsill, thoughtfully watching the sunlight reflect off the glass of the skyscrapers. She liked observing how people behaved down on the street or inside offices.
Watching people had been her greatest hobby for the past couple of thousand years.
