Turns out the lights were on because our house was being robbed when the crash happened. The front and back doors were wide open, and our stereo receiver was on the floor of the living room. They had been spooked by the crash and/or the police lights. It was the luckiest car accident I’ve ever had.

So I stayed in place. The guy’s car ricocheted off us and crashed through the front of our neighbor’s house. The neighbor was in the bath and came outside in a towel. The cops showed up right away and while we were standing around I said “hey Dad, it looks like we left the lights on all weekend.”

Pretty much the same thing happened to me when I was about 10, except the guy didn’t get away. We were in the last 10 seconds of an all-day road trip so I had already unbuckled my seatbelt. The impact spun us at least 180° but I was sitting backseat middle right on the axis of rotation. 1/x
