Co-existing with beavers: Corvallis, nonprofits try new tactic in bypassing dams Groups turned to a solution that's helped communities across the country trying to protect beaver habitat while allowing humans to do their thing. The fix: putting a notch in the dam, then surrounding it with a cage big enough for passing fish but not for beavers to get in and repair it.

A popular path along Mulkey Creek in Corvallis recently became flooded after beavers built a dam in the area. That prompted several groups to look for a solution that would allow the beavers to remain busy in the area but keep the path open for public use.

U.S. Forest Service unveils extensive closures of research facilities Cost-cutting move is expected to cause resignations and turmoil

What will happen to the 82 USFS experimental forests around the country? Many sites have decades-long experiments that are tracking how forests are changed by timber harvesting practices and climate change. As I say here, “you can't just pick up an experimental forest site and move it to SLC.”

They lived to tell the world Northwest Portland author Elizabeth Mehren listened and spread their message of resilience

"It was the stories of those who escaped brutality in their homelands that compelled Mehren to write 'I Lived To Tell The World.' As she says, the book found her: 'I was so impressed with the clear-eyed nature of their experiences, the way they described their experiences.'”

And of course I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout out the role of beavers, who are laying the groundwork for salmon recovery in Spencer Creek & other Klamath basin streams by creating rearing ponds for the next generations of coho & steelhead.
