Behold the power of collective action! Strike avoided with a tentative agreement between the faculty union and #IllinoisStateUniversity admin. #edusky #academicsky
Faculty standing up for students. Students standing up for faculty. Standing together to hold a university administration accountable to its community. This is the power of organizing. This is teaching and learning in community. #academicsky #edusky comradefranson.substack.com/p/students-m...
It has been many years since I signed my first #union card. Today, I am a proud member of the ISU union as we continue to stand up to a university administration that must be held accountable to the community it serves. #strongertogether #academicsky #edusky #unionstrong jacobin.com/2025/03/illi...

United Faculty of ISU (UFISU) members voted overwhelmingly last week to authorize a strike, and our union officially filed the required Intent to Strike notice today with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. With the legally required 10-day notice filed, members may go on strike as early as April 4. The filing does not mean that the 650 members represented by UFISU will definitely go on strike, but allows the union to do so, if needed. The parties are scheduled to bargain again with the assistance of a federal mediator on March 28, April 2, and April 4. Critical items still to be resolved include workloads that allow for adequate time to interact with students, fair compensation, leave policies for new parents and caregivers, and university commitments for student mental health support. “As faculty, we are dedicated to ensuring that our students get the high-quality education and services they deserve," said Dr. Derek M. Sparby, Associate Professor of English. "To continue to attract and retain world-class educators at ISU, this administration must bargain a fair agreement that shows they value our faculty and recognize what our students need to reach their potentials here at ISU. If President Tarhule and his team want to avoid a strike, they need to fulfill their responsibilities to this university and its students immediately."

Twiddling your thumbs while waiting to hear whether Columbia will negotiate with a higher-ed kidnapper?
Give this a read. Several wonderful Teachers College faculty and I wrote about how we see this moment in Us education across the life span.

🚨New Publication Alert!🚨 'When the State looks at you’: Administering whiteness through surveillance, affect, and efficiency in elementary literacy teaching. Published (open access) in Whiteness and Education: doi.org/10.1080/2379... #academicsky #edusky #iteachenglish @tandfresearch.bsky.social
I conclude by considering how these influences work to administer whiteness in the name of literacy.
the findings highlight the ways white teachers responded to networks of surveillance, the salience of whiteness in these responses, and how literacy teaching was then shaped through the polic(y)ing of literacy and literacy teaching as something to be administered.
In this article, I examine the influences of high stakes testing, education policy, surveillance, and whiteness on literacy teaching. Informed by Foucault’s disciplinary power, critical race theory in education, and critical whiteness studies,
