Federal investment in UC research Federal funds are the university’s single most important source of support for research, accounting for more than half of UC’s total research awards. Many of California’s leading industries grew from UC research, including biotechnology, computing, semiconductors, telecommunications and agriculture. Providing health care at UC University of California Health (UC Health) is one of the nation’s largest public academic health systems, serving as a critical part of the California safety net. UC trains approximately 36% of the medical residents in California
The university of California is a powerhouse of innovation, healthcare, and social mobility for California and the US.

Universities are not passive beneficiaries of government largesse. It is the federal government that depends on universities to conduct the research that keeps our nation healthy, safe and economically competitive.I discuss in the Washington Post.

My op-ed in the Mercury News:
A proposed HHS rule would delay vaccine updates and stall innovation by forcing unnecessary placebo trials.
It’s bad science — and worse public health.

Excellent piece by @julieparsonnet.bsky.social on infectious diseases as root causes of a number of chronic human diseases; pausing research on bacterial and viral infections will limit efforts to cure neurodegeneration, autoimmune, metabolic disease as well as cancer

Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
The very exciting aspect is that there’s still so much important biology to discover here.
As a person in this area who has done a deep dive into both neutralizing antibody biology (Fc- independent) and Fc- dependent functions, I say this without hesitation.
HHMI is hiring for 3 new positions!
