once I was in a HK supermarket and suddenly realized the backround music they had was Vampire Killer from Castlevania
To be fair it was Halloween; but still weird and unexpected. I still wonder whether it was a fan, or somebody did a lazy Google search for "vampire music"

cover of a book called "write your own adventure programs for your micro computer" , depicting a knight holding a lance in epic battle against a fire breathong dragon
I had this one... it was grrat fun. The adventure it has did not feature any dragons, though ๐
In honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility, I'd like to remember the late Danielle Bunten Berry.
She was best known for being the creator of M.U.L.E. (1983), but also designed my favorite Apple IIe game: Robot Rascals! (1985)

Happened to me with a Neogeo CDZ I got shipped from Japan. The thing was oozing nicotine smell like an aura imbibed for decades. Luckily it went away after being aired out for a few weeks...
the original Apple II came with manuals that had source code (they were very optimistic about their users ๐ ) but after that... I suppose knowing the hardware tricks became a bit of a trade secret?
tsundoku!
in the West, Umberto Eco also coined "antilibrary" as a similar term. It is supposed to be a good thing ๐คฃ
what was that Japanese word for having piles of books at home waiting to be read? we need a similar word for video games
Final Match Tennis is all simple wave sounds... it's sounds a bit like an old school pong clone ๐ it would need a completely different sound driver to improve that...
cover art of the Boku Dracula-Kun for tbe Famicom
There was an attempt at least
Here you go: youtu.be/ETtCWYWSeMU
a screenshot of Audacity showing volume differences between the original ROM and two WIP builds
Good idea, but will need some time to put it together. Meanwhile here is a comparison screenshot in Audacity (top: original, bottom: the patch)
the voices get coverted to a very low bitrate PCM; in fact the original samples from the ROM sound better than in-game
title screen of Gunhed, a game for the PC Engine, showing copyright information and a robot with a cool pose
I made a ROM hack/patch for Gunhed on the PC Engine also (a.k.a. Blazing Lazers), increasing the overall volume of the music, SFX, and voice samples.

as a bonus, it includes a utility to inject your own voice samples, if you want to customize yout game further!
in-game screenshot for Tenseiryuu - Saint Dragon for the PC Engine
I made a ROM hack of Tenseiryuu - Saint Dragon (PC Engine) to silence the obnoxious noise when you fire your weapons. We can hear the music now!

Thanks to @randomstranger.bsky.social for the inspiration
I get the joke, but that kinda sounds like Robinson's Requiem ๐คฃ
maybe you can get the article sponsored by IKEA ๐คฃ
I know what game is coming ๐คฃ
any tips on understanding when to use which waveforms? or some custom ones that are interesting for the PCE?
Ah but its not the same as "aged poorly"... for example: I struggle to feel engaged to Mario games now. Back in the day I've 100%'ed Mario World, Mario 64, and Galaxy 1... but now I've barely touched Odissey, Maker 2, and Wonder. Those are still fantastic games! It's more wanting other gameplay
I can believe that some very influential games were "you had to be there" kind of successes and nowadays got diluted (copied) so much that we may find the gameplay bland
do you have any tips on making music for the PC Engine? I use Furnace but it's still hit and miss translating to real hardware (plus I haven't used samples yet)
congrats!
These are sad reminders that we don't really own digital purchases. Makes it hard not to yearn for the high seas.
Recently, I only trust GoG and Steam but I do occasionally fall for the convenience of getting a certified emulator for my phone...
Omega Factor was such a fun game. I remember there being a lot of story to go through
peak "look parents, your kid can learn with this thing" ๐คฃ
to be fair, it is historically foundational but is nowhere near the same gameplay a modern game can offer. Same as Space Imvaders, Ultima 1, or Wizardry 1...
SFC:
Torneko's Big Adventure
Jaki Crush
Shin Megami Tensei
Chaos Seed
PC Engine:
Devil's Crush
Download
Zero4 Champ
Silent Debuggers
Alien Crush
They all have English translations (or don't need one)
I still haven't found something as fun as RR64... it may have crappy unrealistic drifting but it's still so fun
and 100% is not even counting what extra QoL features deserve to be added...
