It is! But also seeing that list kind of helps you understand how to avoid getting too pulled under.
Sometimes I just sing the Jason Isbell line "And I fight the urge to live inside my telephone" to my phone so we both understand what is going on.

"When an app combines these four features — solitude, bottomlessness, speed and teasing — it creates a kind of recipe for overuse for nearly everyone, Schüll says."
All the jobs in PreK are fantastic.
My daughter is the class meteorologist. She looks out the window with binoculars while the kids sing a song. Then she puts magnets up and tells people about the weather.
Incredible.
I have some cool jobs but I have never had a job as cool as CABOOSE.
Libraries are great bc someone working here just told me about the history of Zaner-Bloser cursive.
I looked this up and it turns out this is not the cursive I learned as a kid.
Sometimes I think there are so many podcasts bc we aren't just asking strangers to tell us awesome stuff.
I got my first choice even though I did not complete my application (to a high demand program as indicated by 🔥emoji) until the laggards hour of 9:02 AM.
It was a weird combination of relief and disgust.
It is absolutely within the capacity of the park district. There are many good ideas about how to make it better so I don't understand why they are attached to the current system.
And also any application system improvements should also include expansion of programming/seats.
In Chicago today—what was supposed to be a simple off-street cleaning at Eugene Field in Albany Park turned into an encampment sweep that lasted for hours.
City workers destroyed two unhoused residents’ belongings and shelter.
When I've seen it on protest signs or deployed in the context of should have done something earlier the person quoting it is almost always scolding someone else for not having done something rather than reflecting on their own inaction. It doesn't quite land the same.
My take is that the poem is a reflection on the act of saying nothing and realizing too late that resistance has to happen early and often.
When someone quotes the poem they are internalizing the "I said nothing" part In a way that kind of muddles the "I" and loses the reflective quality.
Mekhi Phifer was also in Carmen: A Hip Hop era where he famously starred alongside Beyoncé whose greatest role is Beyoncé.
My Blockbuster video always had SO MANY copies of this movie and in looking it up I learned they made an absolutely bizarre change to the plot.
Operating outside the bounds of my scholarship here but this is one of those things I file under "There's no Mekhi Phifer"
A thing I wish people understood is that the Niemoller poem is set in a universe where the Niemoller poem doesn't exist but quoted in a universe where it absolutely does exist and thus is deployed in a very different context.
The biggest and strangest gap that I've experienced is for 7th and 8th graders because they are too old for a lot of the your kid needs supervision stuff and too young for high school age programs and opportunities.
I think that's a time kids can benefit from community hangout settings a lot.
Childcare for school aged children occupies a really odd space in the collective imagination. I think people understand why little guys need care but it's still treated as an individual/family issue for kids 6-12.
Huge for me
Boundaries are not about creating visible limits or compliance conditions for other people. They're about setting limits for yourself so you can be guided by your own values and capacity in stressful situations.
That little shift makes asking, accepting and refusing so much easier.
I think a lot of this is internalization of the idea that privacy is only something you need if you're doing something wrong and I profoundly disagree.
I am a huge advocate for transparency and also a huge believer in privacy from the stance of dignity, autonomy, and consent.
The difference between my first and second choice camps for my son is roughly 45 minutes a day each way of commuting which for someone who already has pretty limited windows for working was just a REALLY ROUGH consideration. So yeah I was doing this whole dumb thing and I'm mad.
We used to live by a park that had a really popular in-person sign up and bringing your lawn chair to the line was A THING.
I hated that.
I think they also do reserve some spots for in-person registration but We need to stop creating systems for people who get off on this shit.
I'm pretty sure it's not possible to get your first choice if it's a high demand one without going in before and creating a wish list which I did for the first time this year.
Also on the topic of Park District camp being inexpensive it is definitely the most affordable option and yet most camps in my neighborhood are in the $400-500 range.
That is a significant unexpected expense if you are not already budgeting and planning for summer child care
A shaded out green button that says starts in 3 minutes and 15 seconds
They have a by the second countdown button 🤦🏽♀️
Look most parents are beyond pointless thrill seeking. This is not making anything more exciting for us.
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. She is standing the woods twirling an arrow between her fingers. I am analogizing sign ups for affordable Public summer camp with the hunger games except for the critical difference that no one is watching and no one cares.
In approximately one hour Chicago parents of school aged children will try to get their kids enrolled in summer camp in a needless spectacle of scarcity.
A vintage map of Chicago's lakefront in bright orange and blues. A white text circle with black text reads, "Skunk Cabbage Books Indie Bookstore Day Hours. Saturday April 25: 10:00 - 6:00. Sunday, April 26th: CLOSED."
We have some special hours for this coming weekend over Indie Bookstore Day.

While this editorial mentions state-city budget wrangling it critically omits that New York City has a local income tax. The same editorial board has derided plenty of efforts at progressive revenue and municipal revenue generation which is why I feel like this was written in bad faith.
funds out, guns out

NEIU has a whole bunch of amazing human rights related courses and events going on this semester. There's a lot for students but plenty of things (including the event I'm at today) that are open to the general public
