So many of the quirks of how romance, among other things, is marketed boil down to "if you say the word 'sex', a lot of people will get weird about it even if they really want to read about sex"

Imagine if we categorized books by degrees of violent content but could only describe it via a cute euphemistic spice scale

As a reader I definitely prefer more straightforward language

Even when I wrote romance I didn't find spice levels to be a very useful categorization, and definitely not outside of romance/erotica. Tbh, I feel like it's entered the general lexicon because people are still really uncomfortable using direct, plain language around sex
