Thank you to MEP 🇪🇺 🇭🇷 Nikolina Brnjac for a productive meeting on EU road safety priorities ahead of discussions on the next EU budget. Good to exchange views on improving governance for assisted and automated driving.
Delighted to co-host the 2026 Herman De Croo Lecture with @etsc.eu & @waymo.bsky.social in Cambridge. Nick Reed’s thought-provoking talk on “good vs bad drivers” in an age of automation sparked lively debate well into dinner. #TransportSafety #RoadSafety #FutureOfMobility
Where 30 km/h and 20 mph limits have been introduced on urban streets, deaths have fallen sharply.
The question is not whether change is needed - but how quickly we make it happen.

The @iea.org is wisely urging countries to reduce highway speed limits to reduce energy use. This win-win policy will also reduce the frequency and severity of road crashes.
A technology that prevents a driver from opening their door into the path of a passing cyclist.
Wouldn't it be awesome if all cars were fitted with this feature?

Important announcement from UK gov today on road safety. Note that UK road deaths decreased by a mediocre -8% over the last decade. Norway, another relatively safe country, managed -40%. Norway had a strategy, targets and political will. The UK...not so much.

“It makes no sense to delay life-saving safety features on the very vehicles that will spend most of their lives on busy city streets surrounded by pedestrians and cyclists. Affordability is important, but it should not be achieved by cutting corners on safety.”

Responding to a draft proposal leaked to the Financial Times, ETSC has warned that plans to grant a 10-year exemption from updating essential safety regulations for a new class of small electric cars will put pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicle occupants at risk.

We need an EU Road Safety Agency🦺
Road transport remains the only major mode in Europe without an independent safety authority.
🛑Having an EU Agency dedicated to #RoadSafety is essential to achieve the EU’s #VisionZero goal of zero road deaths by 2050.
