Our story of the week is Consider Richard M. Nixon Drinking Navy Grog at Trader Vic's, Capital Hilton, July-something, 1974, Washington, D.C. by Leslie Pietrzyk.
Okay, we are signing off now but if you missed us and would like us to answer a question, reply here and we'll get back to you.
You're welcome! :)
Hi Liz! I look for dazzling language and a strong plot, but I don't mind a quiet story either. It's hard to describe exactly - maybe it's that I like stories that seem to know what they're doing. Where it feels like the writer has put in their all - where only they could have written it.
It really varies - sometimes we only copyedit. Other times we fall in love with a story that we think might need to a bit more work from the author. We try to keep our own voices out of it - we believe our job is to support the writer in achieving their own vision for the work.
When stories come in they are assigned to readers who vote on the piece - positive votes go on to more readers. If they love it too, it ends up on our editorial table. A minimum of six editors will read every piece on our table, and our editors of the month get first dibs. We choose what we love.
Read some of our published stories. That weird thing you wrote that you love, send that! Join a writers group. Put a story away for a little while and don't send us a first draft.
Hi Liz, thanks for asking! There definitely is NOT a "Forge" story, which is what I think makes us so interesting. We are diverse in our tastes and our published stories reflect that. We love to be surprised by a fresh voice.

The Editors' Prize will replace our annual competition and means we we can consider stories up to 3,000 words, rather than focus purely on under 1,000 words. Don’t worry flashers, we still love you and your stories will continue to be considered every bit as seriously.
Send us your brilliant words!
We are excited to announce that every piece we publish in 2026 (our 10th anniversary) will be considered for our first annual Forge Editors’ Prize voted by our editors as story of the year. The announcement will be made in December and the prize will be $500.
