So yesterday I completed a personally significant educational milestone, my younger child learned that she was accepted into her dream college, and i finally saw with my own eyes that my older child’s health has finally turned a truly hopeful corner. Stop acting like it’s all fucking over, ok?

Been reading those “advice to 30 year olds” posts going round this place and I’m going to counter all the “call your mom” notes with the advice that saved my life: it is your mother’s responsibility to love and believe you and if she doesn’t and won’t then walk away. Your one and only life awaits.

I want our young people to know that there is a path forward, that a better world is possible. I don't want them to give up, to become cynical. They deserve to be young and full of optimism. They are owed a world that supports and sustains optimism.

I want those of us who are getting into our middle-aged years and beyond to understand that as cynical and sad as we might feel, we have a responsibility to ensure that those who come after us have the energy to go on, to be creative in their problem-solving, to believe change is possible.

It’s going to break your heart how many people you know, love, and respect will turn out to be cowards. Prepare yourself as best you can. You are not alone, but you are your own center. Be a strong center.

I have incarcerated comrades & loved ones who are enduring the daily torture of US prisons. They also continue to make art. They often don't have the proper supplies and yet they make it knowing that it will never make it out to anyone else. But they continue to make art nonetheless. Keep making art
