Composer, Alf Clausen

Composer, Alf Clausen

Vale the great, great Alf Clausen. So much joy and light in your music. Such effortless mastery and such exquisite lightness of touch.

I’ll be listening to “Swing Can Really Hang You Up The Most” on a loop in your honour. You’ll always be a hero to me

It’s from Saint-Saëns’ film score for the film “The Assassination of the Duke of Guise”

It’s not well-known music, but it should be.

My pleasure in meeting someone whose expertise encompasses the arts, applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, education and social justice AND plays the viola, is approximately equivalent to Homer Simpson’s pleasure in the Land of Chocolate

I think the right teacher is someone who understands how to help you become player you want to be. If they’re killing the joy of it, they’re not the right teacher for you. Sometimes it can take a few trial lessons to find the right one. Where are you based?

10 years is a long time with same teacher, especially if you feel like you don’t have the guidance you need. Is it worth seeking out some trial lessons with other teachers?

Hi Balázs - the quality of the instrument is a major factor. Also the condition that it’s in. You can have a good instrument that’s badly set up, so its quality is masked - a good violin repairer/maker could help, and it might just be as simple as shifting the sound post. Good, new strings help too.

Practice Mute Violin Violin practice mute specially designed to produce a high quality strong muted sound for your instrument

You’ve probably seen these before, but this is an outstanding metal practice mute

The contact surface with the bridge is lined with cork, and it clips firmly on so it won’t fall off and scratch anything. Great sound too
