Border Report: Deterrence Starts Way Before Migrants Reach Our Border Strategies to keep migrants from entering the United States don’t just begin at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Deterrence doesn’t stop migration—it forces people into deadly paths like the Darién Gap, where people face physical violence, sexual assault, robbery & death. These dangers are fueled by U.S. policies that restrict legal migration routes and push people further into danger.

I’m also curious if there’s something better. I usually stick with border sets because the enforcement of different borders works in tandem to both exclude the “unwanted” and facilitate the movement of the rich and powerful. So far “border sets” has made that thought click the best for my students.
