Inequality in the College‐to‐Career Transition: Building Career‐Relevant Cultural and Social Capital on Campus American narratives about the value of a college education emphasizes the economic utility of translating a degree into a “good” job after graduation. Youth are encouraged to obtain a college degree ...

My recent research (compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...) found the same pattern: experiences like internships, service learning, and study abroad are essential for students to translate their academic credentials to labor market success.

At Chapel Hill, Only Health-Sciences Professors Have Been Getting Tenure The UNC Chapel Hill board hasn’t tenured a single professor in fields outside the health sciences since January. The inaction has prompted confusion and alarm among faculty.

This is shameful. The UNC Board of Trustees fails to vote on all tenure cases in Arts & Sciences, holding faculty in limbo without any explanation or timeline. This affects both assistant profs up for tenure and new tenured hires.

How DOGE’s grand plan to remake Social Security is backfiring The agency is abandoning an initiative aimed at preventing fraud, the latest example of a failed effort by Elon Musk’s disruptive cost-cutting team.

Many of the major changes Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service pushed at Social Security have been abandoned or are being reversed after proving ineffective, while others are yielding unintended consequences and badly damaging customer service and satisfaction.

Why I’m Resigning from the NSF and Library of Congress I cannot participate in systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging.

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging."

Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

I wrote about my decision in TIME.

DOGE says it has saved $160 billion. Those cuts have cost taxpayers $135 billion, one analysis says. The push by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency to slash federal funding will cost taxpayers money, nonpartisan group finds. Here's why.

Elon's DOGE cost taxpayers at least $135 billion, not counting the costs of all the lawsuits. www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/dog...

Is college worth it in this economy? It depends on whether you build social and cultural capital.

The value of higher education continues to be questioned within an uncertain economy. Establishing programs that shepherd all students through career-relevant capital-building activities could pay dividends for both institutions and graduates.

Why does this matter?
It is critical for colleges and universities to consider how they can facilitate career-relevant social and cultural capital building for students not coming from advantaged backgrounds.

I identify two important structural factors that shape building career-relevant social and cultural capital: institutional gatekeepers and opt-in involvement.

Why? These campus experiences are important because they build what sociologists call social and cultural capital.

If these experiences are so important, why don’t colleges simply encourage all students to participate in activities that help them build social and cultural capital?

I talked with 60 UMD graduates about their experiences in college and what happened after graduating as they tried to translate their degrees into jobs. Students who engage on campus and work in professional settings are often able to translate those experiences into “good” jobs after graduating

When I worked in student affairs, I was often perplexed watching students who did all the “right” things during their college experience—internships, extracurriculars, study abroad—flounder trying to find jobs after graduation.
