it's rarely brought up that the need to slap fake bylines on AI content is a tacit admission that no one wants to read it

Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.

Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

It’s sort of happening already, but with mRNA vaccines and not quantum computing. People keep saying that LLMs will cure cancer. mRNA vaccines appear potentially to be curing at least pancreatic cancer *as we speak*. They are, for my money, the most revolutionary invention in many years.

I find it hard to remember well, I think partially because the days were so similar and uneventful, and partially because I may have done something akin to repressing parts of it?

I also isolated until both I and the people I wanted to visit were vaccinated. Even as a homebody, I hated it. I left the house about once a week and saw only my husband in person. My school and work both went fully online for 3 years. I cried my eyes out at every birthday or holiday we missed.

That was wild to watch. Harley’s head shaking afterward should worry people about a concussion.

Yet another example of ‘killing someone using a gun is murder, but killing someone using a car is an oops’

I keep seeing people say “he clearly had a mental breakdown” as though that excuses he choices. People have mental breakdowns all the time and don’t murder somebody! Murdering somebody is always a choice! Violence against women is not the inevitable, unavoidable result of mental health issues!

Genuine q: wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that the goal of ‘policy’ is to liberate people from oppression, rather than ‘politics’?

Quackery is a fun book about this, if you haven’t read it!

This must be so bizarre for you to think about.

Thanks medicine! Science is awesome.

Maybe you can daydream a little about what it’ll be like to start doing one of them while you wait. I found that helpful. The politics one could be low-hanging fruit. (Although you should definitely ignore this completely if it’s unhelpful!)

That sucks and I hope you get back to some or all of this soon! I had a similar pause in all my hobbies and passions when I got laid off because of the political situation. In the meantime, though, you’re still cool and brilliant. All those things will be lucky to have you when you’re back to them.

The other examples of it that come up when you google don’t look anything like this, though.

Yes! This is one of the things that makes me sad about it. When I hear people I know using ChatGPT for stuff like this, I worry it’s exactly because those relationships in their lives are non-existent or unhealthy.

I’ve started to feel like I’m just skating across the surface of things, recently.

Same. We obviously have a bit of a history with theologians in general and I, as a person who knows very little about theology, really wish we would get materials that engage with scriptural text deeply more often than we do.

I have a family member with celiac who double bags rice Chex. So the outside bag gets gluten on it, his wife opens that bag and holds it open, he takes out the second bag, opens it, and eats the Chex.

I’ve heard of wards that use *only* gluten free bread to deal with this level of sensitivity.

Holland did too, and my secondhand understanding is that he was greatly respected as a scriptorian among the apostles, including Oaks. I think that the recommendations about other translations we got at the beginning of 2026 are interesting here as well.

I’m just over here extremely emotional over opening a card my grandma sent to find her handwriting has become shaky recently. Is this what adulthood is like? I’d like to return it, then.

Anecdotally, I have a sister in law (she’s like 25) who is absolutely convinced *and explicitly attributes it to social media* that she and everyone her age will never be able to buy a house on their own. She also makes more money than I did when I bought my house 5 years ago by a very wide margin.

I totally agree. I also think it’s another thing that’s related to social media. I’m well-off but I’m positively swimming in posts about how people can’t afford anything (particularly housing). That can be pretty convincing, but the people who post about that aren’t necessarily representative.

HAPPENING NOW: Great Salt Lake Rising, headed by Josh Romney, announcing a $30 million donation by the Millers (Larry H. Miller Group), Maggelets (Maverik) and Marriotts (hotels) to help reverse the lake’s declines. That can mean purchasing water for the lake outright or other needs. #utpol #Utah
