My son lost his keys at middle school a while ago. But on Friday when I picked him up early for the dentist, I spotted them in the lost and found basket thanks to this vintage @wednightrides.org carabineer

Inspired by André Gorz, 1973: "...the car wastes more time than it saves and creates more distance than it overcomes. Of course, you can get yourself to work doing 60 mph, but that’s because you live 30 miles from your job and are willing to give half an hour to the last 6 miles."

I'm pretty sure the quote "cars create distance" is from Ivan Illich's "Tools for Conviviality", also published in 1973. If you zoom in on the sign in the picture you can see the citation! ("I. Illich") Page 52 of the text, page 77 of this pdf: monoskop.org/images/2/24/...

Do you think there's any special significance to the 4.40% level? I feel like I've seen this particular yield get a lot of attention lately

On change: My local library closed for a time for repairs. I started going to a different branch. There's a great cafe nearby. Now every Sat, my family goes to the cafe and the library. I've even switched my holds to the new branch. Never would have happened if my library hadn't closed for repairs.

Wild that they sometimes ride on the sidewalks/verge

Honestly, none of this applies to me (I had to search up both 'echelons' and 'Ronde van Brugge') but I'm enjoying the overhead views of the Belgian countryside. Thanks!

Today would be a wonderful day for a long, 5 or 6 hour bike ride. You'd start off chilly and frosted, but warm up in the sunshine, shedding layers in the afternoon rays

I think it's at least partly the phone's fault. Smartphones (and the apps on them) have been designed to be addicting, distracting, etc. Not so for laptops. I'm a cusp Gen X/millennial who prefers to do most online shopping on a computer.

"I used to think that if there was reincarnation, I wanted to come back as the president or the pope or as a .400 baseball hitter. But now I would want to come back as the bond market. You can intimidate everybody". --James Carville

As I was telling my barber yesterday that after being allowed to watch Poltergeist at age 5-6, I was scared of closets well into my teens, I realized that my chosen home, the rowhouse I've lived in for the last 10 years and hope to live in for the rest of my life, has zero closets

It's less direct, but perhaps a prologue to Grendel's Mother

Really neat 1913 picture (courtesy of David Raymond Saxon on Facebook) of the Kitchen's Lane covered bridge over the Wissahickon!! It's not exactly "covered" here - the bridge was unhoused in 1904 and remained in place in this form until 1940, when a replacement wooden span was built!

thanks for the recent Creeley posts. I saw him read his work while taking poetry classes in college, he stays with me

I love both of these details. I'd noticed these two quirks in street design before but never knew their history

Can confirm I hate these things and hope city council bans them ASAP. Autonomous boxes rolling around on our sidewalks with 360 surveillance cams, no thanks
