Why haven’t perovskite solar cells taken over the market yet? A new paper in Nature Energy shows that the problem is not a single “culprit,” but a chain of interconnected chemical processes that gradually undermine cell stability.

Polar chromosomes are rescued from missegregation by spindle elongation-driven microtubule pivoting - Nature Communications Polar chromosomes in human cells are prone to late alignment and segregation errors. Here, the authors show that spindle elongation rescues them by repositioning astral microtubules via a pivoting mec...

Your cells divided thousands of times today. Most chromosomes landed where they should, but some got stuck.
New #RBI research reveals how cells rescue trapped chromosomes during division, and why cancer cells often fail at it.

What they learned:

1) the reaction starts only when a hit is strong enough to crack the crystal (a “threshold” event)

2) the process moves forward in jumps, each strong hit adds a small step

3) a tiny amount of water can help, but too much can slow/stop the reaction

Mechanochemistry is doing chemistry by smashing and grinding powders (often with little/no solvent), like in a ball mill.

A team from RBI and @fau.de used computer simulations to watch a single impact like an ultra-slow-motion replay at the atomic level.

45 years of Martinska! IRB’s field station near Šibenik is our window into the Adriatic: a rare freshwater–brackish–seawater interface, long-term monitoring, and data that inform real decisions—from biodiversity and fisheries to planning and climate adaptation. Wishing Martinska continued success!

When Cocco talks, climate walks.

These microscopic workers keep our oceans thriving and our climate stable. They've earned their day.

Join the initiative by sharing this post and using #CoccolithophoreDay. Help us get recognition for the organisms that have been shaping Earth's climate since long before humans existed.

6 months ago 2 0 1 0

Why do they deserve recognition?

They capture CO2 and build ocean ecosystems. They're sensitive to climate change and when they falter, it's an early warning for our planet. Almost no one knows them, yet their impact is global.

Now we are making things right. @Ruđer Bošković Institute @marescience.bsky.social @heriotwattuni.bsky.social International Nannoplankton Association Norce are jointly proposing to make October 10 International Coccolithophore Day!

For a week, we've been dropping hints. Today, you meet coccolithophores.

They've been working without recognition for millions of years, building calcium plate shells, producing oxygen, capturing atmospheric carbon. Their blooms are visible from space, yet most people have never heard of them.

In a world visible only under a microscope, a story unfolds that's changing our planet.

Like grains of sand that build beaches, these microscopic organisms are constructing something far greater.

Follow us and reveal the secret heroes.

🌊 Why is the Adriatic turning yellow every spring? Not pollution — it’s pollen. And thanks to scientists @institutrb.bsky.social + partners, we’re finding out how it affects marine life.
