We have that here! Except that they're not 'absent', they own all the commercial properties on the ground floor. So essentially, what they say goes. The 'system' is rigged against an individual owner resident imo. As in everything, the more you have the more you get.

A Strata building really needs a Strata Committee, comprised of (up to 9) owners. Better if the majority are resident owners but they are the direct conduit to the SM. Any owner can ask the SM to have work done but the SC issues the directive to the SM on behalf of the Body Corporate.

SO much, this! To make matters worse, today I learned at the dentist that I have gum disease & that I 'need' to have BOTH top & bottom teeth & gums 'deep cleaned' - at a total cost of $1500!! So I made an appointment to have the bottom done but I'm going to cancel. So much fucking money on teeth! 👎
My kids & I had already read all of them before that came to light - possibly even my grands - but frankly, much as I abhor her principles I wouldn't consider banning her books. They're fun, & depict, friendship, loyalty, & courage as important character traits & that's important imho.

I hate that. And I often wonder where these ppl get their $. When my son & fam were trying to buy their 1st house they lost out on one at Auction to a local guy who was on to his ELEVENTH property! We *really* need a cap on investment properties. *They* are the scumbags, & the worst landlords.
That's great! Strata is a pain in the butt but I decided that it was a good idea to have someone else worrying about repairs etc. And it is. Our Strata Committee works hard to ensure the upkeep of the entire building, so that's something. Rubbish & recycling handling is a nightmare but it always is.

I hate investors. All they want to do is make money. One of the owners in my building owns 5 apartments. I think he's probably a reasonable landlord, I know he reduced the rent significantly in 2020, but still all his decisions here protect the owner investors rather than the resident owners.
So, after making the supreme sacrifice & getting to the dentist at 10:00am, they have me down for 10:30!! Fuck me sideways, can *nobody* do their job properly anymore?! Same thing happened at podiatrist a few doors down about a month ago.
