This doesn’t mean you’re to blame, it means that your identification with your thoughts is what creates your problems.
When you observe thoughts instead of believing them, problems transform into passing mental events rather than defining realities.
Adams is saying that the past has no real, independent existence, it lives only in your mind. The moment you stop recalling it, it effectively ceases to exist in your present experience.

The sea never tells the same story twice.
At dawn it whispers in silver,
at daybreak it burns with gold,
at dusk it sighs in violet shadows.
Stone, sky, and water — ancient companions,
holding our fleeting moments like secrets ...❤️💙
It is truly a shame — and deeply saddening — to see so many people squander their lives judging the faults of others, only to realize the stupidity of it all on their deathbed, as they come to see how grotesquely and foolishly they’ve wasted their own lives.
Why do we fixate on the external world, when—like in quantum physics—observation itself shapes reality? The true illusion may be believing the 'outside' is more real than the mind that perceives it. I think I know why: few are willing to face themselves—their own abyss, as Nietzsche put it...
There are two kinds of fools in the world: the one who stumbles blindly into error, and the one who, believing himself wiser, rushes to expose the first. Both reveal something about the nature of ignorance—one by action, the other by judgment.
For those earnest souls who, in all sincerity, seek after God.
— from my book Metanoia (2022)
As the world slowly loses its soul, we Maltese recall an old saying: "Kemm konna aħjar meta konna agħar" — "How much better we were when we were worse."
There was richness in our simple life, and now, as Oscar Wilde rightly said, “People know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
All types of social media are specifically designed to keep you hooked in your solipsistic, egoic mind. You believe that what you believe is always right, and that those who don’t think like you are always wrong—don’t you?
…There has never been a greater religion than this.
When you point a finger at the 'world', three fingers point back at you—but you're too unaware to realize it. You ignorant human being - it is all in your mind...
I don’t care much for politics, but if there’s any in my books, it’s this: to protect the fragility of your inner life in an age of noise; to defend the poetic within you against the algorithmic; and to insist—gently but firmly—that your spirit still matters.
The mind is a web of identifications. Remove them, and what remains is not nothing, but Śūnyatā—the no-thing from which all arises. In this state, labels like Republican or Democrat, Socialist or Liberal fall away. If that seems impossible, it's because your egoic mind still holds you trapped.
In quantum terms, to observe is to alter and to touch one part is to affect the whole. Likewise, when you try to fix the world without knowing yourself, you distort both — because you and the world are not separate. Among a million, perhaps only three or four truly know themselves. Gnōthi Seauton...
The universe is not outside you—it unfolds within. What you perceive as reality is shaped by your own egoic structure, a projection of the mind. All that you seek, you already are. Few will understand this...
