That's one side of the coin. Repairability is another aspect where regulation is needed. Many appliances are unnecessary difficult and/or expensive to repair.

If Ukraine-Russia Negotiations Fail, Victory Remains an Option The secretary of state and the top American commander in Europe just gave two very different perspectives on the war.

My latest in @thebulwark.bsky.social: There’s nothing inevitable in war, and the Ukrainians are in very strong defensive positions right now, and are improving weekly, their ability to generate force and to reinforce those positions. www.thebulwark.com/p/if-ukraine...

We passed the 1.5C climate threshhold. We must now explore extreme options | Sir David King We do not have the luxury of rejecting solutions before we have thoroughly investigated their risks, trade-offs and feasibility

Beware the "doomism/geoengineering nexus". Here's a classic example of how exaggeration of the facts (warming in fact has NOT yet crossed the 1.5C Mark: www.climatecouncil.org.au/resources/ha... ) is being used to justifying dangerous techno-gambit w/ the climate: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Don't get fooled: Electric vehicles really are better for the climate » Yale Climate Connections Over its lifetime, the average electric vehicle produces less than half the carbon pollution of a gas-powered vehicle.

Myth: EVs are worse for the climate than conventional vehicles
Reality: Driving an EV produces only HALF the lifetime climate pollution of a gas-burning vehicle

Holy crappazola! Global battery storage capacity additions increased from less than 1 GW per year to more than 40 GW per year... in less than a decade. They *more than doubled* between 2022 and 2023 😯

Sizewell C cost ‘has doubled since 2020 and could near £40bn’ Treasury expected to decide whether to support EDF-backed nuclear power plant in this year’s spending review

Sizewell C, 2nd nuclear power plant in the UK, shows little learning.

Nuclear still ~ $10 000/kW

Or you could put solar on your roof:

Solar ~ $2 000/kW

10 kWh/kW of battery f~ $3 000

Seasonal storage ~ $3 000/kW

That's already a better deal, but...

Humans Implicated in Africa's Deforestation 3,000 Years Ago A new study published in the journal Science suggests that humans might have played a significant part in the sudden deforestation of rainforests from Central Africa. This work contradicts the prevail...

Flamanville nuclear power plant connected to the grid in Belgium!

But:
- after 17 years instead of 4.5
- costing 23 billion euro instead of 3.3 (14000/kW)
- first mayor repair (reactor cover replacement) already scheduled for 2026

🚨We’ve broken through the ice shelf! Our crack team of hot water drillers have melted their way through 587.96m of the Ross Ice Shelf to reach the ocean cavity, providing crucial access to the climate secrets hidden in the seafloor below. Well-deserved ‘victory toasties’ all round! 🧪 📷Ana Tovey

Yes, we're all humans, with limits to how much we can fight basic psychological mechanisms. It is key that don't make fighting climate change about who's best at it bc in the big picture, all of us fall victim to it. To varying degrees, but nevertheless.

Thanks for sharing. A lot of good points. IMO especially that touting tipping points isn’t needed because people already feel extremely worried, not least because of extreme weather events. What is needed is to boost efficacy, to communicate the feasibility of getting to net-zero.

God episode. Og spændende teaser for næste episode. Som baggrund kunne du måske være interesseret i en artikel jeg lige har fået udgivet: doi.org/10.1111/cura... Jeg kan sende handouts fra en præsentation, så det er nemmere at få et overblik.

The notion that the Amazon is the lungs of the Earth, ignoring that most of the oxygen in the atmosphere has accumulated over eons because of trapped phytoplankton at the bottom of the ocean (that doesn’t mean we can just burn the Amazon, though!!!)

Saving (for) the Planet Download the free Project Drawdown report "Saving (for) the Planet: The Climate Power of Personal Banking" — and change how you bank today

We often get asked, "What can *I* do to help address climate change?"

Well, one of the things that matters most is how we manage our bank accounts and investments. Do they, without our knowledge, help underwrite fossil fuel expansion?

Here's a place to learn more:

Nice piece. The idea of completely neutral scientists is pretty absurd, especially climate scientists, given the situation we’re in. Wanting to make a difference for people and planet is definitely what has driven my own climate communication research.

Reducing contrails could be a surprisingly effective climate solution - Cipher News Not all opportunities to address climate change are created equal. Contrails may be the low-hanging fruit of the aviation industry.

This is a cool place we could make a difference on climate change, very quickly.

Avoiding contrails is one of the "emergency break" solutions we advocate for at Project Drawdown. Solutions that could have a disproportionately fast impact on future warming.
