A bit of both, I aim primarily towards the latter (policing), but we will see how it develops as we hire new people etc!

Detroit, NYC, DC and Philly murders through March per year since 1960

Detroit, NYC, DC and Philly murders through March per year since 1960

New York City, Washington DC and Philadelphia all are reporting the fewest murders through Q1 ever recorded (note that NYC's data is only through March 29 but the city should easily set a new low). Detroit reported the fewest murders recorded there through March since 1964.

Remember to be wary, as today is the only day of the year that incorrect or misleading information is posted on the internet.

Thanks. And yes, a lot, but divided on four universities and 10 co-PIs it is a more normal amount (~2.5M per year per PI). What is special is that it is more long term - semi-permanent. Very good to have a stable source of funding over time!

Symbolpolitik mestadels med andra ord.. Men kan säkert ha viss avskräckande effekt.

And, finally, this will be a great match with our police Phd research school which starts next month when we will welcome police employees to join our doctoral program on 50% while they continue to work for the police the other 50%.
Stable research funding + police practice research partnership

This will also help us build on the Centre for policing and prevention - where we already have themes of research on serious violence (which overlaps with vulnerable children and drug markets) and on the use of technology in police investigations (emerging technologies).

There are ongoing projects on organized crime (with Kim Moeller, LSE and Gothenburg), on youth prevention (led by Anna-Karin Ivert) and on new tech I have benefited for a long time from collaborating with Martin Boldt, Anton Borg and others at the computer science at Blekinge Institute of Tech

This new funding will thus help us continue to build on existing projects and collaborations and to develop it further. This applies not least to our collaboration with police at local, regional and national levels, and with social services in many different contexts. But also to research collab.

And in many cases there is significant overlap. For instance our current work on organized crime and cocaine smuggling sees the use of _emerging technologies_ such as encrypted chats to exploit _vulnerable children_ to perpetrate crimes in relation to local and global _drug markets_.

I will be responsible for emerging technology in relation to intervening and disrupting crime and my close colleague Anna-Karin Ivert will be responsible for child vulnerability in relation to intervening and disrupting crime.

We will however also be involved in other parts of the SRA.

The SRA is divided into three preventive practices:
* Intervening and disrupting
* Judging and controlling
* Punishing and treating
And three key challenges:
* Child vulnerability
* Drug markets
* Emerging technologies

And for each of the nine resulting combinations there is a PI appointed.

🎉🎈🍾Very good news - today our consortium led by Lund University were awarded a "Strategic research area" for practice oriented research on crime. A strategic research area is a large, semi-permanent, addition to research funds.
We will receive SEK 25 million per year from 2028.

"Autocratization is now truly global. (...) In 2025, Western Europe and North America registers the most notable decline on both country- and population-weighted averages. This is primarily due to the recent developments in the US."

Wow, vidrigt.

It's fascinating to me that Sweden, once global pariah for flouting lockdown consensus, seems to have come out better than even its Scandinavian neighbours

Scientists no Longer Find Twitter Professionally Useful, and have Switched to Bluesky Synopsis. Social media has become widely used by the scientific community for a variety of professional uses, including networking and public outreach. For

Bluesky is the new science Twitter, new study by @whysharksmatter.bsky.social and Julia Wester concludes!

"Results show that for every reported professional benefit that scientists once gained from Twitter, scientists can now gain that benefit more effectively on Bluesky than on Twitter."
