begonia: a deep pink that is bluer, lighter, and stronger than average coral (see ‘coral’ 3B), bluer than fiesta, and bluer and stronger than sweet William, called also ‘gaiety’
In our latest ep we get enthusiastic about colour terms with @korystamper.bsky.social, author of the new book TRUE COLOR!
Thanks to the generosity of four more patrons, we're now giving out 5 free memberships, some at 3 months and some at 1 year!
Well I was worried that no one would comment on this post and we would have no one to give the gift membership to but turns out there are three extremely sweet comments immediately, halp, I wish I could gift em all
If anyone else would like to add to the number of gift memberships, that's here:
If you wish you had access to bonus episodes that are enthusiastic about linguistics, in addition to the free episodes, you might be in luck!
Leave a comment on the linked post (NOT this tweet) and you might be the lucky person to win a free year of bonus episodes, donated by one of our patrons!
The dedication at the beginning of TRUE COLOR is "For Margaret". We assumed that was someone important to the author herself, but...
Our latest bonus episode is the second half of our interview with @korystamper.bsky.social, where we get enthusiastic about the twist in her new book TRUE COLOR!
yay, enjoy!
Missed our previous bonus episode?

It's so great that we did a @lingthusiasm.com two-parter for the first time ever. You can listen to the first half now, and the spoiler-filled second half will be out as a bonus later this week: lingthusiasm.com/post/8115654...
Happy book birthday to the best non-fiction plot twist I've read in a long time:
We have all the base t-shirt colours that redbubble makes available! (The default preview option isn't very high contrast but there's no option to turn off certain t-shirt colours, you just decide it when ordering)

You can be a nerd about language in a way that's about curiosity and enthusiasm and drawing connections rather than judging people
This is a great podcast. Really fascinating and a lovely break from the news of the world. Go listen to a Canadian and an Australian talk about linguistics in a fun and accessible way. And if you enjoy it and have the means, consider a little subscription.
Any linguists know of any answers to this question? 🐦🐦
I want to have a little anniversary thread about the economics of running a podcast while also being a writer (and in my cohost's case, an academic)
Because I think some people might think I'm living off having written a bestselling book seven years ago and lemme tell you, that doesn't math
We're beginning to hatch some plans, watch this space 👀
Have you listened to @gretchenmcculloch.com and @superlinguo.bsky.social's wonderful linguistics podcast @lingthusiasm.com? Please give it a try—and consider supporting the great work they do! Their most recent episode features @korystamper.bsky.social talking about color terms!
Today marks 9 years since we launched on Patreon!
It's no exaggeration to say that we would definitely have stopped making the podcast by now if it weren't for our patrons
So if you want to help us keep getting enthusiastic about linguistics where you can listen in (or read transcripts!)
The screen-filter story in this episode is an all-timer!
It should replace the five-men-who-are-blind-grasping-an-elephant parable as a lesson on perspective.
Imagine five people on a video call looking at a swatch of purple:
-one is in New Zealand, where the purple looks purple-y

All you ever wanted to know about colour and colour language and more. @lingthusiasm.com this was such a joyous hour. Absolutely loved it - I am going to buy @korystamper.bsky.social 's book first thing as I get off the train open.spotify.com/episode/3QG1...
Another highly recommended episode of @lingthusiasm.com (or link Susy I am): @gretchenmcculloch.com and @superlinguo.bsky.social talking "raindrops" ♥️ with @emilymbender.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/2bhZ...

lingthusiasm is always fun, but this episode is *extremely* fun
Just preordered True Color based on this very entertaining episode! Yes, I DO want to learn more about our weird color words!
honestly I've been thinking about your comment this whole day 💚
sometimes it feels like getting enthusiastic about linguistics is a sort of trivial diversion from all the genuine horrors happening in the world
but like. yeah. we can't be angry and sad all the time, curiosity is worth cultivating.
I have been waiting for @korystamper.bsky.social to give colour terms the full book-length story since 2014 and our chat with her extremely does not disappoint
It's devoicing to match the t bc "used to" is in the process of becoming a modal (rn it's what's delightfully called a "quasimodal")
Fun fact: this also happens with "have to" (hafta, hasta), eg "I have to book (a flight)" vs "I have two books"
Same with supposed to (sposta); also wanna, gonna
There are no words for how much I needed this right now, at least I don’t think there are. If there are, though, odds are pretty good that one of the three participants here would know them…
