Public support key but harder to keep as Canada Post strike drags on, experts say Public support is key to the success of a strike, experts say, but as the Canada Post strike drags on, that support is likely getting harder to maintain.

Public opinion plays an important role in public sector labour disputes, but support can be difficult to maintain.

Check out the latest on the #CanadaPostStrike by @rosasaba.bsky.social with commentary from me and Adam King.

I think we as an industry need to issue a moratorium on the phrase "calling out" in headlines and ledes until we can agree on what it actually means

At what point does media (movies, TV, for example) start getting labeled as AI-free, the way some food products are labeled GMO-free? Asking this as I watch a rather realistic AI-generated video posted on X by OpenAI

Opinion: The arrest of Indigenous journalist Brandi Morin chills press freedom in Canada yet again In recent years, police in Canada have set a dangerous precedent around muzzling journalists for sharing the lived experience of Indigenous Peoples

"... once her mugshot and information is in the police system, she becomes effectively criminalized – a double insult, given that Brandi is an Indigenous woman who was arrested just for doing her job, by police who also disproportionately criminalize us."

A crowd gathers at TMU and a speaker at a microphone gestures to a table with flowers and candles. Its a vigil.

A crowd gathers at TMU and a speaker at a microphone gestures to a table with flowers and candles. Its a vigil.

Tonight, I attended the Journalists for Journalists vigil at TMU. It was a powerful event. The organizers were fully aware that attendees could face repercussions for attending, which was the most damning thing I've ever heard said of our industry. Still, a big turnout paid tribute to the fallen.

Today and every day, I'm grieving for the journalists killed in the Israel-Hamas war. For them and for their families, for their colleagues and for the stories they were killed telling. #JournalistsForJournalists

(There was a moment of silence, lasting one second for each journalist killed. It went on for nearly a minute and a half.)

A cluster of white flowers and electric candles layered across a stretch of pavement. There's a photo that's presumably of someone who died. Behind, two people hold up a banner displaying dozens of names.

I did not anticipate how dystopian it would feel to attend a memorial for journalists killed in Gaza/Lebanon/Israel and to be conscious that doing so could be seen as subversive.

Al Jazeera journalist Samer Abudaqa killed in Israel attack on Gaza Gaza rescuers retrieve Abudaqa’s body after Israeli forces blocked them from immediately reaching him in Khan Younis.

north american journos are the same folks who put the ukrainian flag in their bio in 2022 but rn they do not give a shit about palestinian journalists being killed. CPJ and some other groups highlight it but cdnmedia is especially silent. make it make sense.

I hope to raise my kids to be ambitious—not to think about war, missiles, rockets. Every day, I see a fear in their eyes that I can’t do much about. It’s very painful. If you have kids, you know how horrible it is not to be able to comfort them, to ensure they are alright, to make them hope for anything beyond living one more day. We want to live freely like other people—to grow scientifically and economically, to walk in the street without fearing bombardments, to make plans. We want to be able to learn, think, grow, travel, dream—to feel like we are really human. Not to think only about meeting our basic needs. This is what life has always been about for us, and now—I want the world to know—we are being eradicated en masse. This is not what life should look like.
