Hi @mateloos.be. We're also pleased Beam is using Matrix. We're working with Beam to try to ensure they financially support the upstream project. A government building a major Matrix platform should, ideally, support the open source project it's building on.
🇪🇺 The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) obligations are coming in 2027, introducing security-by-design for all digital products in the EU - including open source.
We’re already taking responsibility and building the blocks for our compliance.
The latest Signal & WhatsApp breaches targeting German & Dutch officials show the risks of using consumer apps in government.
❌ As European governments pursue digitally sovereign strategies, they should ban the use of consumer apps for government-related conversations.
At @fosdem.org, @neilj.bsky.social shared why sustainability is essential for open source and decentralised networks like @matrix.org.
🌱 We support by investing in independent governance, keeping core functionality open source, and lowering the barrier to adoption with ESS Community and Element X.

are you looking to selfhost? github.com/element-hq/ess-helm should make it super easy to get going (other than it using k8s)
right. the bottom line there is that the readme was just plain wrong, as per github.com/matrix-org/s...; the misleading stuff about the idea of running synapse HA was deleted long before we had to build Syn Pro to survive. Sorry if it feels like a bait and switch; it wasn’t.
which roadmap are you thinking of - can you link it please? failing to recall synapse ever having had a public roadmap, let alone it ever having had HA on it.
ack. thanks for taking the time to enumerate the jank; most of this is on the radar and we are plugging through it.
A software terroir. What a beautiful phrase. We'll be using it in future. ❤️
which jank are you thinking of in particular? Element X really should have removed all jank. (Element Web is still being shifted over to matrix-rust-sdk and meanwhile does contain literal jank). Or are you talking about another client?
Digital sovereignty isn’t about buying European software - it’s about control and choice.
Open source and open standards give governments the freedom to switch vendors, operate independently and strengthen Europe’s economy 🇪🇺

Almost all the EU digital sov initiatives (DINUM in France, ZenDiS + BWI in Germany, SAFOS in Sweden, the EC…) are built on @matrix.org & Element as a secure sovereign Teams replacement, eg www.euractiv.com/news/commiss... - yet we're based in Chiswick. It would be amazing if UK supported its own!
We need a UK Digital Sovereignty Strategy!
Our over-reliance on foreign tech giants is a huge risk to our security and resilience when faced with Donald Trump’s ever increasing belligerence.
Companies like Palantir have no place in our critical digital infrastructure.
Pleased to see @maximilian-henning.bsky.social at @euractiv.com covering @ec.europa.eu's use of Element and @matrix.org.
A government cannot be digitally sovereign if it’s locked into using a specific vendor. Matrix solves that problem.
🚨 Real time communication is mission-critical, but legacy systems and consumer apps put defence operations at risk.
Our new paper explores the messenger challenge for defence organisations and shows how to build a sovereign, interoperable and secure solution on the @matrix.org open standard.
