Some aesthetics from the past couple of days being out on the R/V Roger Revelle! “Cool” opportunity to be part of the PALMER LTER down in Antarctica 🇦🇶

Got a little tour of the RRS Sir David Attenborough which was conveniently parked next to our vessel 🚢
"Doliolids look like hand grenades" oh great, now I'm researching why hand grenade shapes influence trajectory
Back in the Bay for a bit and spotted a couple of sand dollars washed up on the beach
My tourmaline rock reminds me of a rice ball 🍙
I remember applying to the GRFP back in 2017. The reviewers said it was an amazing proposal, but the only reason I was given for the rejection was a B+ in my first-year chemistry class…
Day-tripped to Grand Canyon NPS and hiked down to the Colorado River via Hermit’s Rest Trail. So much to take in along the way. Last photo is a fossilized tetrapod track from the Permian era. 🏜️
Myself at the #ASLO25: co-chair the zooplankton ecology session chaired by @yniimi808.bsky.social! Great talks, including the one by Yuuki himself. And, what can I do? I selfie - bombed Yuuki during his talk
Yesterday we had a very active day at #ASLO25 with five #NSFfunded presentations (sorry Sem I did not get you on picture!), including our ASLOMP scholar Serena, @yniimi808.bsky.social, Rocío and Amy! Lots of interesting chats with colleagues, and new collaborations on the horizon. Good job team!
Had a blast hosting a session at #ASM25 Full of amazing zooplankton posters and talks @blancobercial.bsky.social @biosstation.bsky.social
Seminar poster for an Oceanography talk by Prof. David Ho from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The poster features a headshot of a professor wearing glasses and a beige jacket, with a title reading "Marine carbon dioxide removal may be a future climate solution". The poster includes the university logo, contact information, and the seminar date of Thursday, March 27, 2025.
I'm giving a talk on marine CO₂ removal (mCDR) while all my colleagues who work on mCDR are away at the Ocean Visions Summit in Vancouver. 🥲
A view of the southern side of White Pocket. Polygonal weathering of the homogeneous sandstone layer at the top. In situ aeolian cross bedding is visible at the bottom.
Polygonal weathering from the top. White sandstone fractured and eroded into intricate shapes
Two domes covered with polygonal patterns on the left; soft sediment deformation (a swirly pattern of layered red sandstone) on the right
Several red-colored foresets of the Navajo Sandstone are deformed to create beautiful shapes by the liquefaction of the wind-blown sand
Spent the day at White Pocket, an area in northern Arizona with some of the most spectacular examples (1) of soft-sediment deformation in the Navajo Sandstone and (2) of the polygonal weathering that affects the resulting homogenous rock. These photos were taken with a drone (which is OK to use)

‘“Nature has its way of taking out the weak and the not so well and the injured. The eagle likely thought it would be able to take it out quite easily,” Sequeira [the Ontario-based photographer] said. “But, it wasn’t.””
NEW PLANET NOAA podcast! featuring colleague @agcollins.bsky.social and the importance of #okeanos specimens! #spongeThursday! www.noaa.gov/podcasts/pla...
Excited to share our recent paper, which is one of the first phylogenomic analyses of copepods 🧪
TLDR: the order Harpacticoida should be split, with 2 families forming their own new order—Canuelloida

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.
All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.
More than 20 years ago countries came together at #CBD to adopt a resolution to protect deep-sea ecosystems from destructive fishing practices but #seamounts remain at risk.
Last year we launched our campaign #OceanLifeLines to #ProtectSeamounts.

The #Bermuda Governor came to @biosstation.bsky.social to learn more about the science we do, and how we serve the Bermuda society and beyond. I had the opportunity to talk to him about my work on #plankton, and my service to the Bermuda government.
