Mannnn, yeah it's stuff like that where as an admin my perspective is like. Boundaries should be laid out REAL fast with those kinds of people and they need to get used to discerning reasonable from unreasonable early on. Most of the time ppl who cant see themselves out before it escalates
That's fairer then yeah. I know most people who uphold strictly "you should be able to ban on Vibes" frequently measure the Vibe in question based on cultural vernaculars they dont understand and/or people simply missing cues though so worth the extra elaboration, unfortunately
tl;dr I am tired of offering the dignity as an admin of "private resolution" to people whose problems are public already. If you're a problem in gen chat, that's where I'm pinging you to go "hey, that wasn't cool to do" and the whole server is more than welcome to follow suit.
I've made a habit of openly discussing bad behavior and I cannot tell you how much closure this gives people in my communities. If someone's being a shitter, going "hey, don't do that. that's bad comms and drives people away" outright in as explicit language goes incredibly far.
Notions of "resolving disputes privately is respectful" are goofy. Don't do that. If the dispute opens in public, CLOSE it in public. You can and should confront disruptive individuals in the exact same place they're being disruptive, not pull them aside and quietly dismiss them without resolution.
What I've taken to doing as an admin as a variation of this is very openly talking about bad behavior and outright confronting it when it happens. If someone wants to be a douche in general chat, then I as another resident of the space am allowed to respond in the exact same forum.
What drives people away from communities is when douchebags and predators shit up the vibes and *nothing happens*. Even if the person disappears one day out of the roster, everyone else is still left wondering what happened and why. It doesn't actually make anyone safer. It just causes confusion.
I find that this rule frequently disproportionately targets neurodiverse peers and people of color, to be honest. I dislike it, because it openly invites bias. I have never seen this rule used in an unbiased way. However, I think what you SHOULD do it CONFRONT people based on vibes. Publicly.
