Tesleen was where Ayah's mind went first. She deserved the stars: it was quite painfully clear that she should never be brought back like this. Living Memory couldn't give Tesleen even a fraction of what she had been cheated of. She'd simply have been trapped beneath another burning sky.

Ayah saw him as something of an older brother, or perhaps a cool uncle, and was even less prepared for his death than Ken was. You don't expect your cool uncle to die in your arms. A lot of her naivety died with Haurchefant: she understood, after him, that she had a duty to walk wisely and well.

Ken loved Haurchefant. Losing him was shattering - and entirely unexpected. He'd lost lovers before, but Haurchefant seemed untouchable. It eats him up that he couldn't protect him. He still can't talk about him without distress, and so tends not to, except to Lyse and, latterly, Thancred.
