So for those of us keeping track:
- CBS, CNN, local news stations
- a few production studios
- US TikTok minority ownership + data hosting

Content, distribution, data infrastructure (and government contracts!). All owned by one family with close ties to the president.

Today marks 4 years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At the time, I was part of the team that drafted the Canadian government’s statement on Russia’s use of disinfo as a tactic of war (highlights below).

NSA detected foreign intelligence phone call about a person close to Trump Whistleblower says that Tulsi Gabbard blocked agency from sharing report and delivered it to White House chief of staff

Trump’s Threats to Allies Stir Worry That U.S. Has Lost Its Way New tariffs, insults and threats of invasion trigger a backlash ahead of the president’s visit to Davos.

It is mindboggling to me that the American “thinking class” is only just starting to acknowledge the damage the president has wrought on relationships with allies. “Stir worry” is the understatement of the decade. www.wsj.com/world/europe...

When you remember that President Trump ran for office because he was roasted by President Obama at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, wanting to take Greenland because he wasn’t awarded a Nobel checks out.

Can someone ask Mark Zuckerberg if Meta’s rollback of content moderation will mean they also stop blocking news for Canadian users? Asking for a friend.

Hey rest-of-world, welcome to 🇨🇦 politics. Even if the PM announces he is resigning, that doesn't trigger an election & it also doesn't mean he's going anywhere anytime soon. I suspect he will likely remain PM while the Liberals run a leadership race/he prorogues parliament (look it up). So strap in.

Gotta love when the Beaverton and the Globe and Mail opinion section start singing the same tune. So many politicians, so few public leaders. Happy election year, Canada. #cdnpoli

Online harms bill to be split in two after being stuck in Commons, held up by filibustering Justice Minister Arif Virani plans to separate parts two and three of Bill C-63, splitting measures to protect children from online abuse from new offences that critics say are heavy-handed

Years of effort & promises later the govt was on its way to a good online harms bill with broad stakeholder buy-in. Then they tied it to changes in criminal code. They knew it was never making it thru committee & they wasted time trying. Sigh. Maybe in 2025. www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art...

RCMP commissioner open to deploying cadets to harden the border | CBC News The RCMP says it's considering deploying Mounties-in-training to help police the Canada-U.S. border as political anxiety over border control mounts in the face of tariff threats from the incoming Trump administration.

This is completely insane. The federal policing side of the RCMP is operating with HUNDREDS of vacancies. We just passed the most extensive national security legislation to combat foreign interference. And now we are going to redirect again in a panic?! www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

This seems like a really blunt tool to address an issue that comes down to a lack of regulation of tech giants, who have failed to invest in adequate moderation and prioritize engagement (and profit) above all.

The internet can be really dangerous. But it can also be a lifeline for vulnerable kids.

A detail that seems to get lost in the northward finger-pointing is just how borders work: it’s the Americans who are responsible for who & what gets into 🇺🇸 from 🇨🇦. Yes, Canadian authorities need better tools to crackdown on human smuggling, but it takes two to tango when it comes to border security

I had a feeling but didn’t realize just how much I missed seeing news from verified publications and outlets on my social media.

Between the news ban on Meta platforms & whatever the hell is happening on Twitter, this platform reminds me of the promise we felt about the early days of social media.

Conservatives signal opposition to GST break, $250 cheques, NDP makes support conditional on more spending It remains unclear which parties will support the measures, with the Bloc Québécois and NDP advocating for more cheque recipients

Something that might have seemed like good politics but bad policy ended up being bad on both fronts. Not sure what the calculus was but any outcome seems like an unforced error by the Liberals. www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art...
